But Baraboo school officials have discovered an older law which could make it legal for kindergarteners to carry concealed weapons, if they don’t realize that they have them. District administrator Crystal Ritzenthaler asked her state representative, Democrat Fred Clark, to close the loophole. He proposed a bill Monday to do just that. The older gun ban defines a school as grades one-through-12 – ignoring kindergarten and pre-school classrooms. Under Clark’s bill, the ban on concealed carry would apply to all school classrooms, regardless of the students’ grade level. Clark is asking his colleagues to co-sponsor the bill before he introduces it. He said it was most likely unintentional for lawmakers to exclude kindergarten from the gun-free school law.

It's a little known fact that small children were once used as pack mules. School was a luxury. So after a hard morning of working the fields the children were loaded up with produce and trade items. They were then sent 20 miles uphill, in the snow while barefoot, to school. While in town they would exchange goods with merchants. Often times firearms were part of the trades. Unfortunately the older children would often engage in duels and other acts, like besting cave bears, to prove their manhood. This was often expensive, the cave bears usually won, so eventually the portage of firearms was strictly relegated to the tiny tots. They were often told they were carrying picks and shovels as added security. They never knew what they were carrying. This practice eventually died out as the popularity of steam and electric powered buggies grew. You can only pack about three dozen long rifles on the back of a five year old.
