I've been waiting for this for years now. MY question is, since i just turned 18, and it IS currently night time. Is now an appropriate time to exercise my rights? Or should i wait for the morning. Im asking because im heading into town in a bit here.

Every chance to exercise your rights and potentially help yourself out of harms way is a good time to do it. I trust you have read all the applicable laws? If so then I say go for it. Just remember: Because you have a gun means you have to be more responsible, more cautious and more vigilant. You carrying will probably make you less likely to be chosen as a potential victim, but it could just as easily make you one.

Yes i have researched my laws in south dakota. So i went to the Gas Station to get my smokes and i get a pop and walk up to the register and the guy in this small gas station starts telling me that because there is a little tiny "driveby casino" a few spaces down (maybe 200 yards from the gas station) that I'm not allowed to open carry there. Can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?

Welcome to OCDO, adulthood, and the OC experience.

At this point we should all be looking for an AAR (After Action Report) from your first foray as an OCer.

It's old, it was originally directed at CCers, but it works just as well for that first OC experience:

Since you should have already gotten at least one experience under your belt you can use it for your next outing. Given the People of Wal-Mart you should be able to take your OC walk without anybody raising an eyebrow.

stay safe.

Welcome to OC. I suggest you start posting in the South Dakota thread for more "locally" knowledgeable people in your area.

http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?125-South-Dakota

There may be an OC thread there for your area too that you can meet other people locally to talk and share experiences. We often have OC dinners here in VA and I enjoy them thoroughly!

Do your own research though since no one on this forum is responsible for your actions except you. Read up your gun laws and discuss them to understand all the nuances and changes over time.

Check out the maps to learn about travel and reciprocity in the states you go to. http://opencarry.org/maps.html

Good luck and God speed! :)

This is important. Anyone (including my brother-in-law) can get on here and act like they know the law (much like that gas station attendant), but that don't mean that they do. You should only take the links that they post, to reliable websites, as fact. The rest is their opinion of what the law means.

Hey buddy congrats on being of age, couple things to think about, some people will look down on you. Because of your age and some of your class mates may think your weird(could just be me as I live in a liberal area) but from someone who started carrying about a month ago, go for it and carry every chance you can,

Btw as far as laws go, a man in my area prints buiseness cards with the OC laws and restrictions in VA and I usually carry a printed copy of all applicable laws
