I live in a nice apartment building that has a security door you have to get passed before you can enter into the stairway to get to your apartment. This morning when I came home from work there was five young adult males huddled around the security door buzzing all of the apartment intercoms and laughing. I kept my distance behind them ask asked them if any of them lived here. They all turned around and where very high and stunk of pot. They all laughed and said "ya we cant find our keys". I told them this is private property (signs clearly visible staying privet property) and I know all my neighbors but did not know them. I told them all the leave before it became trespassing. They all replied with some kind of gangster comment I could not really understand. I told them all to move out of my way as they where blocking the door. The lead boy told me I could either let them in or they would take my keys and help them selfs.

They all started to square off with me and they took a few steps towards me. I know it was not the best idea but I bucked up and challenged the group. I lost my aunt to cancer January 1st this year and was just getting back from visiting my grandpa in the ICU who is currently dying after a massive heart attack two days ago. I was not in the mood for there crap and to be honest wanted to fight. I became very loud challenging all of them, I said something to the effect of leave now or you I really hope you are all man enough to stand your ground and back your words. We got into a verbal argument for a few minutes during witch you could see apartment lights start to come on. I never filched and after a few minutes they backed down and stood near the corner of the building. As I walked to the security door I called 911 and described the situation while the group was still yelling and threatening me. The police did come and talked to them for a few minutes but nothing happened the group had a person in one of the apartments buzz them in and they went down stairs.

A few minutes later even though they where two floors below me I could start to smell pot coming in from under my door and it sounded like they where partying in the common stairwell between everyone's apartment. The group was still talking about me trying to talk tough in front of a third party who was not present when we where outside, I can not repeat what they said but it was not good. I called the police back to report public drug use outside my apartment, a noise complaint and told them threats where being made against me outside my door. It took about ten minutes for one police car with one officer to show up. I buzzed him in and in no more than five minutes (being generous) he was gone. The group did go back into their apartment and the pot smell did diminish but was still in the air.

Over the last few months I have had a dramatic increase of problems coming from that apartment and have been having to call the police a few times a weeks for public drug use and suspicious activity but nothing has come of it. I did talk to my apartment manager about this and he told me he was aware of the problems and told me to call 911 because there is nothing he can legally do about it.

Side note: I work at a place that made me sign a piece of paper agreeing weapons are not allowed at work and at no time shall I be in possession of any type of weapon (firearm and knife specified) including storing the weapons legally in my vehicle while I am at work. Because I went straight from work the visit my grandpa I did not have my gun on me when I confronted the group outside so there is no fear of getting in trouble over them calming I intimidated them with it. At the same time I did wish there was not two doors separating me from my gun if I needed it.

I also know challenging the group was not the smartest but my attitude has not been great this last month and to be honest I did not care they caught me on the wrong day

Presuming a responsive police department, ask them, their crime prevention officer person in particular, the answer to your situation posted here. Best wishes.

You might start making plans to move. This won't get any better if it's all as you describe.

Don't believe me, come over and look at what's happened to all the apartments along Casino Road in Everett. It starts with someone inviting his homies over for a little smoke and fun. Then you'll end up with the place becoming a "drugstore". The landlord or manager doesn't care as long as the apartments are full and the place doesn't burn down. The cops are too busy now out writing traffic tickets so the cities/counties can balance their budgets. Arresting people for poor conduct or drug offenses doesn't generate near the revenue of a bunch of traffic tickets. On the contrary, those arrests just generate expense.

Good luck but if I were you, an address change would be in my future.

Find a new place to live.
Then the Bad Guys win, as Sergei Bondarchuk's Soviet film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's book "War and Peace" taught us, in which the narrator declares "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

ETA after Mr. Levin's post. A crackcooker's lab was discovered just out of sight of my door, around the end of another building. I woke at 0300 to the sound of big engines running at high idle in my cul-de-sac, the fireengines, ambulances and generator trucks as they cleaned out the cooker's house. My police Chief Roddy Perry gave me a bit of grief for not knowing about, and tole me to be a "good nosy neighbor."

I took his lesson to heart and uncovered my CCW in my neighborhood (open carry is still illegal there). The homeowner went away promptly but the cooker stayed on for his federal charges, the fed speedy trial being a lot slower than the state's. He took to trying to intimidate my old lady neighbors. The PD conspired with me to convince him that I was a cop. The extra black&white was parked in front of my townhouse, they turned a blind eye to my OC and when his customers would shoot out my windows I would get a SRT turnout. It was fun. The old ladies enjoyed it and the chemist went away before I did.

My brother is moving out on me and I can not afford it on my own. Despite the problems I have been heaving the apartments are on the luxury side and are very nice inside. They are more than this blue collar man can afford on his own. Our lease it up at the end of the month

Screw luxury. I'd rather live in a trailer park with a bunch of old ladies and retired guys than put up with the gang traffic in an apartment complex no matter how luxurious.

Again, talk to your PD. Maybe between them and the landlord (financial) help might be available. Exchange your services as a law abiding legally armed citizen security interest - a rat on the BG - for a break on the lease. Go to your press, they should be on your side against a disagreeable landlord or an unresponsive PD>

Don't inform your Apt. Manager of you carrying and your intent to use it if need be. There is nothing benefited by that statement and may come back to haunt you in a court if something ever did happen (in fact, this thread is now a liability lol).

As far as the rest.. If it were me personally I would carry to work and leave it locked in the car. Yes, you can be fired over it, but look at the sting of events that just happened. It could have gotten a lot worse, especially when you decided to stand your ground. Like the others say all the time, concealed is concealed. Nobody has to know you have a firearm in your car but you.

Here's Burke in his Thoughts on the Cause of Present Discontents, "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." I note that combine and design rhyme.

I am starting to think the state should legalize marijuana. I am not sure how much you have to smoke to fill your apartment, fill the common way, go up three story's and make its way under my door but it has to be a lot. I think my neighbor alone could balance half the states budget :) I really don't care if he smokes it but I shouldn't have to smell it in my home. I have asthma and it makes it hard for me to breath. The police know this I have told them more than once and still nothing happens, frustrating

+1
Never say things like this to anyone, I also agree you may want to delete the thread or at least your comments.
I hope all works out for you ,but I agree you should move.

So let me get this straight...you have asthma AND a heart defect and you were intentionally picking a fight with 5 guys who were obviously high on drugs? You either have a death wish or are oblivious of your own condition beyond belief.

Next time, walk away and call the police, or use a back entrance, or just drive away and calm down before further actions.

I sense a hint of self destructiveness in your behavior, and sooner or later your going to get your wish if your don't check yourself.

After this morning I am thinking about going down to the office again and telling the manager I do carry a gun for self protection and will use it if I ever feel my life is in danger

No need to tell anyone that. It should be assumed. The gun part notwithstanding, I assume everyone will take appropriate steps to defend themselves until proven otherwise.

I'm out on the 29th only a few more weeks

Really? Then why this thread? You can't tough it out?

I want the last 5 mintues of my life back.

Play some really loud, ultra hardcore thrash metal music... step out on to the front wearing your favorite leather zipper mask wearing a speedo and covered in fake blood, and invite them in for a beer... when they decline, sit there and stare at them for a long akward moment, then tell them that everyone comes in eventually.

lol.

- Hang in there.

Here’s my two cents about what’s going on. I’m not an attorney or played one on TV, just a grunt who works at 911.

There is no need to advise the property management of the fact your excursing your civil rights.

It’s your call about what you do about carrying at work, but if it’s safe to do so, have you thought about leaving your holstered firearm your lock glove box and locking the doors to your vehicle? Just make sure you upholster/holster outside of any cameras when around work.

In regards to the issues at the apartments, make an appointment to speak to the local police community resource personal if they have it; if they don’t, see if you can talk to a Sergeant who deals with drugs and/or gang issues. Let him know that you have called 911 in the past (provide the date’s if possible). During your meeting you may want to ask if there has been any increase in calls to the complex over a past timeframe (he can check with his records department) and see if they can have a crime watch meeting for the complex.

If you have to call 911 about any more issues at the apartments, always ask for the incident number (sometimes called a case number) and that you want the officer to contact you (either by phone or in person). As soon as possible write up a personal recap for your own records. It doesn’t have to be anything especial, just keep a word document, but try to get as much detail as you can…date and time of occurrence and date and time you’re writing it up, story type, account of what happened and where. Note the descriptions of the players (race, sex, age, name, clothing – head to toe, etc); who said what and actions that caused concern (reaching into his back pocket etc), directions if possible (north side building entrance, east parking lot) and landmarks (2nd floor elevators, near apartment 21). If they leave what kind of vehicle (car/truck, color year make, model or American, import, 2 door/4 door/hatchback, anything on the car – body damage, stickers and license plate – even if just part of it) and direction or destination. As you remember more details, go back and add them and just do the best you can. What this does is help you build up evidence about what is or isn’t being done. And yes, include any contacts you make with management about the issues, what they said and any outcomes.

Here are some ideas on how this can help you. If you already had some notes typed up you can bring them to the police and discuss what’s going on. They can also go back and look at the incidents/reports written up by the officers. When you talk to the apartment management about the issues, you can provide them with copies. If you feel management is being unresponsive think about sending copies to the management company or the owners of the complex, it may be in your lease agreement. Maybe something happens and you have to break your lease you can show what lead up to the incident and why you’re leaving. Again any contacts you make, are more notes for your growing file.

I hope this helps you and gives you (and others) some ideas. Keep us posted.
