GRNC Alert 2-5-12
Parks Carry - Ashe County Meeting Monday

Meeting Monday, Feb. 6 - 5:30 pm at Ashe County Courthouse
Be There!

Ashe County will take up the issue of whether to attempt to circumvent the spirit of the new law permitting Concealed Carry in public parks like so many other local governments have since HB 650 (Castle Doctrine and Parks Carry) passed into law. Under this new law a narrow scope of tightly defined spaces may be posted and several municipalities have attempted to broadly define entire parks as prohibited. Others have simply posted the sections they are allowed to under the law. Of course even this circumvents the true spirit of the law, designed to allow self protection. This law also recognizes that there is a reason that park areas are among the few spaces in the state where violent crime has increased rather then been reduced since the NC concealed carry law went into effect 18 years ago.

Attend this meeting if at all possible and send the message that you want more than the bare minimum.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED:

Attend the County Commission Meeting

* The meeting will be Monday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 pm at the Ashe County Courthouse: 150 Government Cir, Jefferson, NC 28640. Please pack the room.
* Contact the county commissioners:
o Judy Porter Poe, Chair
o Larry Rhodes, Vice Chair
o Gerald Price
o Gary Roark
o William Sands

All commissioners can be emailed at one address: administration@ashecountygov.com
* The phone numbers are: (336) 846-5501; Fax (336) 846-5516

Dear Commissioners:

I urge you to respect the new law allowing law abiding citizens the right to self protection within parks. Concealed carry holders have repeatedly proven to be sane, sober and law abiding over the years that North Carolina's CCW ordinance has been in force. Any concerns you have in regards to concealed carry in parks are totally unfounded. Not only have the "wild west" scenarios laid out by those unwisely opposing the concealed carry law not materialized, but in fact everywhere this has been tried, crime has gone down. It is time to allow the right of self protection in parks as well.

Respect my right to self protection in what are often dangerous locations. I will be monitoring your actions via Grass Roots North Carolina legislative alerts.

Respectfully,

Thanks, cricketdad. I'm going to post the link onto the NCGO forum.
At least they didn't expand definitions of places that could be restricted from carrying.

"while attending an organized event by the county"
These are the key words in the newspaper article. So far Ashe county is the only one that has complied with the letter of the law according to the floor debate on the bill. According to the debate on the floor the only time the ban can be enforced is during an event.
