What is Open Carry – Really

What is Open Carry – Really

It is the beautiful bold face of the 2nd Amendment
It is the American flag to America’s enemies
It is the ultimate symbol of American freedom
It is Ronald Reagan’s “Tear down this wall!”
It is “in your face” to the anti-gun left
It is George Washington to the British
It is storming Normandy to the Germans
It is “Cinderella escaping ” to her Concealed Carry stepsisters

If you have an analogy or metaphor for Open Carry, please post it.

    A teachable moment.

    A conversation starter.
A warning to the bad guys, criminals or rogue gov't agents.
A comfort to those who understand.

Open Carry is a walking lecture on Fundamental Human Rights.

Open Carry is a constant reminder that WE are the ONLY people responsible for our own personal safety.

Open Carry is a joyous celebration of Individual Responsibility.

Open Carry is a declaration of a deep and abiding love for our families, whom we have a sacred duty to protect.

Open Carry is a public proclamation that I will NOT volunteer myself or my family to be victims.

Open Carry is a mobile billboard spelling out in no uncertain terms that the "Spirit of 1776" is alive and well.

It is our cause to dispel the foggy thinking which avoids hard decisions in the delusion that a world of conflict will somehow mysteriously resolve itself into a world of harmony, if we just don't rock the boat or irritate the forces of aggression—and this is hogwash."

Open Carry is the voice of the Country Class cursing the Ruling Class.

Open Carry accuses the right wing gun controllers, J'accuse! Ich klage an!

Open Carry is sometimes a fashion faux pas....black or brown leather.

    Open Carry is legal....most places.

Open Carry is a pain when you gotta take a number two in a public restroom....don't want the bottom of my shoes to touch those floors, let alone my nice leather holster and XD.

Open Carry is always getting stuck on my seat-belt.

Open Carry is many more nicks and scratches on my kitchen cabinets.

Open Carry is only buying clothes that fit me and not me plus a IWB holster.

Open Carry is spending more money on a good belt to hold up my holster and not for holding up my britches.

Open Carry is no different than getting dressed in the morning, for me that is....just as it is against the law to go around without your pants on, it should be against the law to go around without a pistol on your hip.

Why does it need to be a metaphore?

    Why not simply:

Open carry is one of the few ways left for most Americans to exercise their right to bear arms without asking permission.

Open carry is the comfortable and quickly accessible alternative to concealed carry.
Don't believe any facts that I say! This is the internet and it is filled with lies and untruth. I invite you to look up for yourself the basic facts that my arguments might be based upon. This way we can have a discussion where logic and hints on where to find information are what is brought to the forum and people look up and verify facts for themselves.

This viewpoint is why the 2A rights movement constantly finds itself banging it's head against a wall, or talking to an audience with the "deer in the headlights" look...

We live in a society where the populace has been INTENTIONALLY dumbed down, and through a concerted effort in the Education establishment, for over 30 years, has had it's abilities for critical thought and rational understanding almost completely eradicated.

The teaching of logic, ethics, REAL history, civics, philosophy and rhetoric have been replaced with feel-good subjects like "social studies", "language arts", and "set theory".

Because of this, the majority of the population quite literally can't understand rational arguments. They can't understand references to history, appeals to ethics or morals, or concepts that require more than 2 steps of philosophical linkage.

We can thank a litany of Globalists, expatriot Nazis, filthy rich "Socialists", Public Relations wonks, "Educationalists" and other demonic spawn for this condition.

But the end result is that the majority of the population of the US isn't much better off intellectually than the cast of the movie "Idiocracy".

So to reach their enfeebled minds (made that way through forced drugging through their food, water, and medication, and by an "education" system intentionally designed to render the People incoherent, irrational, and uninformed) we must resort to more basic methods of communication. We must appeal to emotions, to easily apprehendable images, and to easy-to grok symbols. It is a fundamental principle of PR--make a strong emotive linkage with something that people can readily understand or relate to, if you are trying to sell a complicated "product" (whether it is a computer, a political system, a financial instrument, or a philosophical concept)

We see the truth of our argument, because we are "awake"--we have studied the history of "gun control" and we know that it's roots are in the disgusting, despicable practices of racism, classism and sexism. We have studied the Founding Fathers, and we know what they intended with the 2A (even if 4 of the supposedly smartest judges in the land don't...) We study the law of our states and localities, and case law, and Federal law. We have somehow escaped the clutches of the mind-numbing Educational Establishment, and have propelled ourselves into a world of information and knowledge that the VAST majority of the American People don't even know exists.

But most folks don't do these things. They work grueling jobs they hate for bosses who are low-level sociopaths, they come home and numb their pain with prescription "antidepressants" and self-medicate through drugs and alcohol. They watch all sorts of mind-numbing TV, and waste their free time rooting for sports teams, watching reality TV, and trying not to get in trouble with the government.

Trying to explain the power of "Open Carry" to the average American--even someone who is supposedly "pro-gun" can be like explaining Schopenhauer to a 5-year-old...

    So we use metaphors.

This isn't rocket science. But it IS Public Relations, and to be honest, PR is every bit as complicated, technical, and dangerous as rocket science--especially when you are experimenting with new concepts and practices.

I hope that helps you understand why this thread exists. It's an exercise in creative thinking--bring people "outside the box" and allowing them to think about OC in a manner that people who aren't "gunnies" or rabid Constitutionalists, or history buffs can relate to...

Dang, Dreamer, that wasn't too half bad. I haven't even been drinking and I understood most of it....

I especially liked this: "Trying to explain the power of "Open Carry" to the average American--even someone who is supposedly "pro-gun" can be like explaining Schopenhauer to a 5-year-old..."

    Well done.

I blame 'reality TV', facebook, and the iPhone.

You left out this possible reason for the intellectual and moral decline of the American populous.

Base Commander Jack D. Ripper: * Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake? Children's ice cream!...You know when fluoridation began?...1946. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works. <snip> - Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. - 1964

I got some for you then:

Open carry metaphors are about being an ass because someone else is a jerk.

Open carry metaphors are about defecating in public so someone will talk to you.

Just because someone doesn't go for metaphors and looking for attention, doesn't mean that person is stupid, ignorant or not protective of their rights; or even that the person isn't pro-carry. Of course arguing with someone who can't make any argument other than a straw man or Ad hominemis probably pointless. Carrying for the express purpose of making a scene and letting it be known that most or many people OC for that purpose is stupid. It only gives weight to arguments against carrying and against OC. Given reasons for OC should be about effectiveness and law, otherwise a grievous tactical error is being made. It also sets up more of an us vs them with people who are against OC, that is not the way to win because it only entrenches the opposition even more.

Open Carry is what it is..... different things to different people...

As for me... As others have already said...Open Carry is the way I choose to excercise a Constitutional Right while affording myself the legal right to protect myself amd my loved ones....

What is open carry? See the last line of my signature below...........
Gun control isn't about the gun at all.... for those who want gun control it is all about their own fragile egos, their own lack of self esteem, their own inner fears, and most importantly... their own desire to dominate others. And an openly carried gun is a slap in the face to all of those things.
