Back in August I applied for my CPL. My application was too late for the September gun board but I figured it should go before the board for October board and in fact it was scheduled for the 21st of October.
I knew there would be a question or two for me. I’ve got a couple things in my past on the record, so I attended the September gun board just to see what kind of questions were asked of others so I could practice on what I was going to say
A few weeks later, someone had put a post on the forum about how long it took others to get their CPL and I replied with what was happening so far with my application and that I plan on attending the meeting of the gun board on the 21st of October, Asked or not because I just knew a 1981 incident was going to be called in question.
Someone suggested I not go unless requested by the gun board. Boy am I glad I did not listen to that advice!
As the meeting started, we were asked our names and if we were on the agenda. As he looked for my application I see him pull it out of the bunch and I see in large RED letters on it READ READ READ. Now I am worried, but how could a misdemeanor from 1981, which according to the law is a 3-year CPL suspension, cause such large and bold red letters to be written on my file. It would take about 1 hour of me biting my nails before I got the answer.
As I took my oath and sat down in front of the board the prosecutor said to me, I see you have a very extensive criminal record from the state of Indiana attached to your application, its over 10 pages long. Flabbergasted I said NOT ME! I’ve not been in trouble anywhere but in Michigan and that was 30 years ago!
So began the 20 question game of who are you and are you really you. Once the board was fairly sure that I was not who they had though I was when I sat down, they wanted to see my tattoos on my forearms for final conformation. I have no tats on my forearms the other guy did. Seems that two mothers had sons born on the same day but in different years with the same name. Apparently that was all that was needed to confuse the board a bit on my identity. I knew of him from years ago when I kept getting confused with him on my credit report, but never knew he was a criminal as well.
Once I was me again, they did ask me about the 1981 incident, but just what lead up to it. The second incident was not listed in the MSP data base, ask me to explain what happened and told me since its not in my criminal record there was no reason to bring it up again, I was not going to argue since both dealt with weapons.
Had I not shown up to face the board just incase they had questions for me, I would have been delayed an additional month in getting my CPL approved! For me, it worked out in my favor.
