Congresswoman: Norway gunman touted lax US gun laws
Rep. McCarthy urges limits on high-capacity clips, cites 'shame' in easy buys

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43933511/ns/politics-more_politics/

So it's the fault of America, the Constitution, the Second Amendment, the NRA, gun accessories manufacturers and all of us evil gun owners. It's a good thing we're taking all the blame off Breivik, we now know who the "real" culprits are!

Howdy Amigo!
Yeah, it couldn't possibly be that folks in Norway have no possible means of defense. No guns.
Even their security guy at the camp wasn't much help, being among the early victims.
And the cops, taking about an hour to 90 minutes to arrive... couldn't have anything to do with that.
They took a boat to the island, which broke down, and had to be towed by a local fisherman.
Ain't they got helipcopters up there?

Ten to one, the shooter has never been to the United States, so what does he know about our gun laws?
I'm pretty sure that murder is illegal in Norway just as it is in America.
And when's the last time we heard of a shooting where 60 or 80 people got shot?

Everytime you get a wack job like this, it ain't never his own fault.
Ever is it the media, video games, bad upbringing, tough childhood, ambivilant parents, or some other lame excuse.

How about this as a causitive factor:
Gun free zones!
Schools are gun free zones. Where do many shootings take place?
Post offices are gun free zones. They've had enough violence to coin a phrase unique to them; "Going postal!"
Norway! Gun free society, defenseless against a shooter.
Is it just me, or does anybody else notice a pattern emerging here?

Blessings,
M-Taliesin

What utter nonsense. The only reason he got them from the US is because they were too expensive in Sweden. As usual, what the anti's wish to legislate would have had no impact on the crime whatsoever. :banghead:

Gun-free zones are a significant causative factor, particularly for those who loose just enough marbles to plan out and maximize their revenge against society. If they knew they stood a poor chance of accomplishing their goal, they'd probably sit in a corner someplace sucking their thumb instead of going forward with their plan.

Blaming "Large Capacity Magazines" for these incidents is like blaming computors for Child Pornography.

Please keep is simple

Congresswoman, this is not Norway.

Bottom line is the background checked wouldn't do any goods or banned item because the gunman was and is before became a first killer.

Who cares what carolyn macarthy says?? She is irrelevant as well as an embarrasment no matter what side of the gun issue your on. Carolyn is a whining old woman that no one pays attention to anymore, except those who poke fun at her. Yes, kind of like sarah brady.
Does anyone on this forum, or anyplace else, think that Norway is paying attention to her senile like comments? Norway should be trying to keep a low profile on the whole incident that has exposed that country's pathetic handling of the entire incident.

Personally, not I. By the way, it's Representative Carolyn McCarthy, Democrat, New York's 4th Congressional District, which is in central Long Island. All that money on LI probably saw her as a handy political puppet to further their aspirations. She's been serving since 1997, so if term limits existed for members of Congress, she'd have been gone by now.

On an impersonal basis, however, whenever anyone who commands the press time like a Congressman speaks out in a way that's nonsensical, it's important to highlight that nonsense alongside what does make sense.

She is irrelevant as well as an embarrasment no matter what side of the gun issue your on.

Undoubtedly. However, not ubiquitously i.e. not to everyone. Please keep in mind that she did get elected, which means more people in her state voted for her than the other candidate. Furthermore, other people in other states listen to her, so again, it's important to counter her arguments.

I think people in Norway gave it a passing glance. Having lived in Germany, I can tell you the newspapers overseas do occasionally pick up comments from U.S. politicians, particularly on issues of headline news. They're usually not painted in a very good light, though. It's sort of like "look at the foreign windbag trying to tell us how to run our country."

Getting back to McCarthy's comments in the article, I'm going to address them in the next post...

Rebuttal to McCarthy's comments in the article

"The U.S. should be ashamed that its laws would allow high-capacity gun clips used in the Norwegian massacre to be sold and shipped overseas, says a New York congresswoman seeking to restrict use of such clips."

First, the reporters use of the term "clips" indicates he knows nothing about firearms. They're "magazines," not "clips." Thus, he's probably a media flunky for the Brady bunch.

Second, a 16-round magazine is not "high-capacity." It's "normal-capacity." The 10-round magazines mandated by California are "reduced capacity."

Third, the U.S. is only one of many countries which routinely export firearms and accessories to other countries. If the other countries which to curtail their import, that's up to them.

Fourth, Norway's restrictive import laws and their gun control laws are directly responsible for disarming the general public and creating the opportunity for Anders Behring Breivik to fire away with little concern that anyone might return fire in defense of themselves and others.

""There should be a lot of shame," Rep. Carolyn McCarthy told Politico."

She's right - there should be a lot of shame! However, it's she who should be shamed, about her ignorance. For example:

"McCarthy said Breivik easily acquired high-capacity ammunition magazines from the United States."

So? Cho didn't use high-capacity magazines in the Virginia Tech massacre, a point about which McCarthy was obviously confused, as revealed during her April 18, 2007 interview on MSNBC's program Tucker, where Tucker Carlson interviewed McCarthy concerning the Virginia Tech massacre.

Thus, high-capacity magazines aren't an issue. The issue is the fact that disarming the general public, thereby preventing them from defending themselves against people like Cho, Breivik, and Jared, creates a target-rich environment for any and all criminals and the criminally insane.

"The National Rifle Association has decried HR 308 as more than an attack on Second Amendment rights, saying, "Firearms designed to use magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are among the most commonly owned self-defense firearms today." There would be no way to tell new magazines from old ones, which are used for law enforcement, self-defense and target shooting, the gun-rights group says."

The NRA is also missing the point. Cho proved that the capacity of the magazines has NO bearing whatsoever on the issue. Given the fact that most Americans go around unarmed, allowing the law-abiding citizens who are armed to carry a high-capacity magazine may very well mean the difference between them being able to take down the likes of Cho, Breivik and Jared instead of running out of ammo and becoming a victim.

"In a section called, "How much ammo does a soldier bring to a battle?" Breivik cited a need for high-capacity "banana clips.""

For those Americans who're law-abiding citizens, the capacity of their magazines makes zero difference with respect to them committing a crime, while actually enabling them to more effectively defend themselves and other law-abiding citizens. Furthermore, it does absolutely nothing to deter law-breakers, as illegal sources of high-capacity magazines will always be around.

With respect to the Second Amendment, however, any such restriction infringes on the right to keep and bear arms, and is therefore Constitutionally illegal.

"McCarthy blamed the "the easy availability of high-capacity ammo magazines in the U.S." for helping "enable a large-scale massacre.""

As we've shown, this line of thinking is not only without grounds, countering logical, rational thought, but taken to the extremes as in Norway and what McCarthy proposes for here in the United States, it actually puts citizens in serious jeapardy.

""How many more innocent people need to die before we realize that some simple, commonsense gun safety laws in the United States could actually save lives?""

How many innocent people in Norway and other countries with tough gun control laws need to die before you, Representative McCarthy, and your similarly brain-dead Brady Bunch cronies realize that gun control laws CREATE the situations whereby innocent lives are readily taken by people like Cho, Jared, and Breivik?

I think I've read enough of the article. It's trains of thoughts are so completely void of logic and rational thought that even the best reporter would have difficulty avoiding looking like an idiot.

Except... "High-capacity magazines were also used in the 1993 Long Island Railroad mass shooting that took the life of McCarthy's husband and seriously injured her son..."

Oh-ho! Now the truth comes out! She hasn't a clue as to which way is up. Her attacks against guns are nothing more than an abuse of authority based on an emotional response, same as that which drove Sarah Brady in her efforts. Neither have any basis in fact, rational thought, or logic.

Ok, I'm done.
