School Makes Boy Take American Flag Off Bike

13-year-old Cody Alicea rides with an American flag on the back of his bike. He says he does this to be patriotic and to honor veterans, like his own grandfather, Robert. He's had the flag on his bike for two months but Monday, was asked told to take it down.

A school official at Denair Middle School told Cody some students had been complaining about the flag and it was no longer allowed on school property.

Californian Politics at their best.

I am also pretty sure that this Violates The Federal American Flag Code.

I'd like to speak up for the kid.

He is acting more maturely than anyone else in this situation. Until the matter is resolved, he is going to fly the flag on the way to school and the way home. During school hours, he is going to fold and store the flag. Meanwhile, they are going to talk to administrators to resolve the situation. The kid was raised well.

I have no doubt that the school has no reasonable justification (or even an unreasonable rule in place) for barring this flag. It shouldn't even get to the lawsuit point before the school backs down.

BTW, what complaints???? Who could have possibly complained about the flag??? On what grounds can you possible complain about a small American flag flown from the back of a bike???

I expect a suit won't be filed. The school will likely back down before it comes to that. However, if they stand firm, expect a suit. Advocacy groups will spring from the woodwork offering legal services.

When I was unlawfully detained for OC, I repeatedly said that I did not intend to sue. Montgomery apologized and changed their policies and training on OC. Problem solved. Make no mistake about it though, while I did not intend to sue, they could have forced me into it, and knew they could.

By saying that they do not intend to sue, they accomplish three things: They give the school the opportunity to voluntarily make things right (preferable). The family will rightly be viewed as the reasonable parties in the matter. The implied threat of a lawsuit is still communicated.

In no way does this mean that, if the school is intransigent, there will be no lawsuit. Bet on an unrepentant school ending up in court.

What I want to desperately know is who were the people who complained? If they were American citizens, either by birth or naturalized, then I have, indeed, lived too long. If they are not American citizens and are not here legally, then they have no basis for any complaint. If they are offended by the flag of this country, then they are damn well free to leave and go back whence they came.

This old man is sick and tired of this business of, "Don't offend this group; don't offend that group." Nowhere, repeat Nowhere, in any of the laws of our land do I find that anyone has a right to not be offended.

Amen to that.

When I was in grade school, I distinctly recall our fourth grade class had copies of the following on one of the walls:

o The U.S. Constitution w/Bill of Rights
o The Declaration of Independence
o The Ten Commandments

Somehow, this didn't injure or break anyone in our class. And God forbid, we even recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang a patriotic song, and read a prayer each day at the beginning of class. The prayer was the choice of the student who's turn it was to lead the class that day. Once again, not one of my classmates were damaged. I continued to know most through high school and still see a few at class reunions. Perhaps we were made of sterner stuff.

On, and the American and Virginia flags were displayed in their stands proudly in front of the class.

The school has already backed down. Seriously WTF are they thinking?

They weren't.

All they knew was that someone complained. Today's public schools have one overriding goal: to avoid being hassled or sued by parents. If it'll shut some parent up, they'll ban the flag. The only reason they backed down? It looked like they were going to get a bigger hassle from rational Americans.

The only permanent fix to this problem is to remove all levels of government from the provision of education. If the nation wants to continue the policy decision to ensure a free K-12 education for all, then fund it without providing it.

That's called vouchers. It will re-empower families to get the education for their children that they want their children to have.

We haven't agreed on much lately but I must second your post here.

I was outraged when I heard this on Glenn Beck's radio show. I'm still outraged. This story and the one about the kids that wore American flag t-shirts on "Cinco de Mayo"
I am not predjudiced, my Aunt is of Mexican descent. My Godparents (God rest their souls) were Mexican. I speak Spanish, altho' no longer fluently. Good people of all races, creeds, and National origins are always welcomed by me here. I am only second generation native born (on my fathers side) and have aboriginal blood from my mother's side from waaaay back. All of that is irrelevant perhaps, but I have met on my travels as a truck driver many people from many countries that are so excited by the opportunity to live in this GREAT land. There I said it!!! Yes America is exceptional. These liberal, progressive, socialist, communist bastards are trying to make US feel like we should apologize for being the greatest dream of mankind. They're trying to bring this country down and make us just like the rest of the world. And it's not going to happen boys and girls. NOT ON MY WATCH !!!!
