I realize this is a very old post, But you are my hero!

Tonight the all important first police incounter. I did not have my phone ready so no audio or video I took my usual walk thru Bella Villa and an officer had someone pulled over, as I walked by he seen my firearm and yelled hey you. Was not sure he was directing it at me so I kept walking, he then says are you a security guard. I turn and walk back towards him, he asks if I am a cop, I say no and he asks what I am doing. I said I am taking a walk, then asks what I am doing with that thing referring to my firearm, then says that has to be concealed. I inform him that open carry is legal with a CCW permit in Bella Villa, he says no its not that he has never even heard of someone open carrying and that it is illegal.

I inform him of his own ordinance that on line six it states that open carry is illegal, but then explain that on line D that it is indeed legal with a CCW permit. He then states that open carry is not allowed in Missouri. I inform him that it is indeed legal and that even in some municipalities that no permit is required to open carry. He then says you know how stupid that looks and that I should cover it up, I respond thanks for your opinion but it is legal. He then says its not legal in Illinois and I inform him that it is legal but has to be in a locked case and the gun and ammo have to be seperated. He then asks me if I think its cool I said no its my right, he says I would rather you cover it up because what if someone doesn't ask you for it they just hit you over the head and take it. I respond that I understand his fears but those are his not mine, says that he is going to look into it and he says that he hopes I am not lying because if I am he better not see me open carrying again. He says that it sounds like I know more about the law than he does and to have a good night.

XD this is awesome, I hope I someday get the knowledge level you are with OC. You could have pushed it more and asked why he was impersonating an officer because he clearly didn’t know the law at all. How can he swear to uphold laws if he doesn’t know them??? Along with your knowledge I need to grow a set and OC.. Awesome story my friend.

Asked to not come back with gun at Walgreens

So tonight I headed over to Walgreens to get some passport photos so I can apply for a concealed carry license from Maine. My mom came along with me. It was the Walgreens at Kearney and Kansas in Springfield, MO.

So I get the photo taken and while we're waiting mom starts looking at stuff. The manager, who had come out of the back room for some reason or another saw my Glock on his way back to the back room, and came over to me.

_____________________________________

"Are you a police officer?"

"No."

"We don't allow guns in the store, so next time don't bring it in." *Walks away really fast*

"Ok......."

So when the photo's are done the picture guy comes over and tells me they're ready at register 1. I go over to the register and there's a lady who's the cashier.

"Are these photos yours?"

"Yes ma'am"

"I thought so. Are you in the armed forces?" *rings up the item and gives me total*

"Nope."

"Oh ok. I just saw you're [unintelligible - means sidearm] and thought that you might be."

"No. But like, a few minutes ago your manager came over and told me not to come back with it."

- from now it's paraphrased since my memory isn't perfect

"What the heck that's dumb."

"I know. I'm following all the laws and as far as I know Walgreens doesn't have any policy against it."

"Yeah you're right. You're not concealing it or anything. You aren't doing anything wrong."

"Yeah. Can I get the store number and the manager's name?"

"Sure! I'm really sorry about this!"

____________________________________

So she gave me his name, a head office type number to call, and the store info. I figure I'll call it tomorrow and see if I can straighten it out. Looks like after only six days of carry, I'm already doing my part to normalize OC.

P.S. Does anyone else find it hilarious that I was there getting CCW photos when this happened?

UPDATE - 8/9/12

I called Walgreens customer service and a very polite lady took my info and my complaint. She told me I would receive a call within 2 business days. Then she said (paraphrased)

"I'm really sorry you were treated this way. I'm surprised this happened; we have police officers, state troopers, detectives and such come into our stores with their firearms all the time and they're not told this. It shouldn't be any different for you."

So we'll see what comes up when I get the call.

FINAL UPDATE - 8/10/12

Today the store manager for the Walgreens I was at called and talked to me. He said he had gotten 3 emails about the case and wanted to hear my account of what happened. I told him, and he apologized for the rude behavior of the night manager. The guy I talked to said that he was going to get his CCW sometime too.

Now here's the important part. He said that although they don't post their stores, Walgreens has a corporate policy of no firearms allowed in the buildings. Looks like another store we'll all have to avoid.

He concluded by saying if I ever stopped by to come say hi, which I told him I would like to but probably won't since I carry every day.

And I guess that's the end of this story. ;)

Carried at Open Carry lunch in St. Charles, MO 11 August 2012

Open Carry lunch in St. Charles, MO 11 August 2012

So I must admit for my FIRST OC event it went really smooth. I will do at again soon. I am not sure I am up to doing it all by myself yet, I just don’t have the muster to argue my point with the police yet. But feel more than comfortable to be part of a group doing OC. I am sure there are many out there like me? Let us hear from you. You may have reservations about attending one of these events but you never know unless you go? St. Charles is very OC friendly.

http://www.jjsstcharles.com was very friendly. Not as much as one employee even acted funny about us being there and OC. They must be used to it since I hear it’s a regular spot for OC get together. We did have a few looks from the general public, but no cops were called I think? If so they must have told them it’s legal and not responded. We did have a gentlemen stop on way out to ask about OC. Is it legal? What web site do I go to research it? Etc. He was eating near by and was listening to our conversation. We only had 4 people show up for Lunch. At first I was sad about this low showing. Then I got to conversation with David and Marc and found they had wisdom beyond my years. I was happy to speak with them for the four hours we spent chatting about everything under the sun. They were a great group of guys and I look forward to the next OC meet in St Charles or surrounding area.

SO FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!
Let's set a new record for this lunch! New to OC, you are especially invited. If you are on the fence about coming, just do it! Hide your firearm if you are uncomfortable, if you have a CCW that is. Just show up and grown the group so that others will follow. You may be pleasantly surprised as I was. You may make new friends with similar interest? Hope to see you all next time...

My first OC

Today was the first day I OC'ed, admittedly, it was in Kansas City Mo and not one of the questionable muni's. It was just a quick run to Hy-Vee on 64th Street. I was carrying my Taurus PT140 on my hip with my shirt tucked in. I don't think anyone noticed at all, except one large hillbilly looking gentleman (that was wearing a 2nd Amendment t-shirt) that gave me a quizical look.

To enter my first irritating experience...

I have open carried since I became legal to, and in that entire time, the only 2 issues I have had occured within 1 mile of eachother, 10 minutes apart.

40 Hwy Walmart,

Long story short, I had KCPD go nuts on me upon seeing my gun on my hip, properly displayed, proper holster, completely legal. He rudely informed me that I wasn't allowed to carry my firearm there, because Walmart had posted signs stating that (in his words) "Due to the stupidity of the public, civilians aren't allowed to carry their firearms here, and that it is highly illegal to do so."

The hell are you talking about copper? I know my rights, I am a law abiding, tax paying, gun toting citizen. PLEASE come show me where it is posted at that I am not allowed to carry my firearm here. (When I became legal to open carry, I was cautious about it until I was for sure where I could/couldn't carry my gun, So needless to say I knew beyond a doubt that I was within my rights.) So he graciously escorts me outside where, to his surprise, it wasn't posted! Somebody please explain how you can provide security at a company... and not know their policies? As soon as he realized he was wrong, and that he had tangled with a civilian who has armed themselves with knowledge, he started apologizing profusely. He didn't expect a 22 year old wearing a firearm and biker gear to know anything... I was glad to prove him wrong.

The next thing happened at the Quik Trip on 40/sterling, where the cashier (60 som-odd year old) tried to tell me that Missouri doesn't have an open carry policy, and if I ever wore it in there again, he would call the police on me. I politely informed him that MO does have the policy, then proceeded to educate him on it. At the end of the conversation he said he was going to buy a firearm and open carry his as well.... 'Merica...... Gotta love it!

This is just me, but I would personally fie a complaint. My reasoning being if LEAs get enough complaints about officers not being informed on the laws they are sworn to uphold, then that might change. We've seen it happen all over the country where media and activists gain enough attention, that the LEAs will perform some training, and now the officers all know the law. As I said, my hope in filing a complaint would be for this to happen locally.

I wish there was some way that we could hold a rally, similar to a biker rally, to just cruise around the cities and go into various stores/places. Dumb idea and a waste of gas but it always amazes me how people are oblivious to the rights they have in their own state...

Don't let anyone tell you it's illegal to open carry in Independence. I have a letter I carry from the chief of police and the city attorney saying otherwise..

Would it be possible for you to send a copy of that for my own personal use? And if not, how can I get the same letter?

New To OCing

I am new to OCing and have a general question hopefully someone can answer. I have my CCW and carry everyday. I carry a crossbreed style IWB holster with 2 shirts, an under shirt so the leather isn't against my skin and then and outer shirt tucked in most of the time. There are occasions that I have my Sig on my side in the crossbreed at home working around the yard, and need to run to the store but don't necessarily want to put on an other shirt over top, is carrying OC in a IWB holster OK? Has anyone else carried this way OCing, have you had any problems? I can see where the leo's my think it is partially concealed.

I'd check with your state laws, but in mine it is. Sometimes I wear my Glock in an IWB holster, but with my shirt underneath it, so half of it is sticking out. It's about half CC half OC, but doesn't really matter because I have my CCP.

There is no definition of concealed in the state statutes, so unless your county or city has defined it, it's a murky area.

What concerns me more is that you are considering open carrying a non retention holster that is generally placed in a bad position to see an approaching gun grabber. I love my Crossbreed, but I would never wear it without a cover shirt.

Edit: I can't seem to think good today...

And this is when situational awareness comes into play while carrying. Especially in a non-retention holster.

I can meet you someplace and give you a copy but it has my name on it? James

I wonder what would happen if I did this and whether it could be considered forgery? here it goes

I am nifty with photoshop, so i wonder if i can get a copy of yours, scan it, blink out your name, copy the font, and then i can make one for anyone that wishes to carry it... but once again, i wonder if that would be considered forgery...

it might be easier if you just tell us the process you followed to get it in the first place, to be honest i would personally prefer that to possible forgery. I can see the headline now:

Missouri open carry act has been terminated due to a number of people forging a letter from the mayor, more at 9!

that would be my luck...

you might just consider getting a paddle belt lvl 2 retention duty holster, yeah granted level 3 is obviously better but i carry a level 2 holster on my duty belt, properly fastened of course, then when i open carry i change out the back to fit my paddle, overall i paid like $44.

Please see post #545, just before yours - perfectly legal and not a forgery.

I agree with Grapshot; It doesn't seem like it would be a forgery if you redacted others' personal information. It seem s to me it would be a forgery if you inserted somebody else's information and passed it off as being addressed to that person. Not only do I think it's illegal, I feel it would also be morally wrong to do so; But as I said, not if you simply copy the original and present it as such.
