considering a permit

Hey all. As the title states I'm considering getting an open carry permit but I have a few questions.
1. If I get a concealed weapon permit can I open carry?
2. My friend got his cwp by using an online website. Can someone direct me to a good site that doesn't cost too much? I did find this one but will it allow me to just go to the sheriff here and get my permit or is it just a safety class?

Thanks for any help. I also would like to contribute a sound bite that I found while looking for a cwp class. It's a leo that goes a bit overboard. Personally I would have done what the officer said. I AM NOT A LAWYER. I SUGGEST THAT YOU TO TAKE THE TIME AND EFFORT TO READ IOWA CODE 724 FOR YOURSELF, AND UNDERSTAND IT, BEFORE CARRYING A FIREARM.

With that said, Ill give you non lawyer advice.
Answers:

1)There is no such thing as a concealed weapon permit in the state of Iowa. They are called Non-Professional Permit to Carry Weapons. Iowa Code 724 does not specify whether the weapon has to be concealed or not.

2)While online certification sites are available, I would suggest finding a class that can be taken, not on the internet. That will help your understanding of the laws, how to carry, etc.

3, 4)The non-professional permit to carry weapons allows you to carry anything other than a fully automatic weapon. Swords, machetes, batons, tasers, etc.

There is a list of other things mentioned in Iowa Code that is also prohibited.

Keep in mind that the bigger, more intimidating the gun, the more attention you will draw to yourself, and the more likely you will be approached and/or harassed by LEO.

That audio is a case of wrongful police actions. The citizen did exactly what I would have done in that situation. The citizen was charged after the fact. The charges were dropped, and I believe he won a substantial lawsuit against the city.

Use your head when your carrying. A gun does not make you invincible. It doesnt make you a cop. It doesnt give you the right to do whatever you want.

Thanks for the info! I don't plan on being some kind of vigilante/cowboy. I'm not even sure I want to carry it around loaded. I'm doing this more to use the rights that I was given by the people who created this country than for self defense. I'm 25 and have never needed a gun. I hope I would never have to use it either. As they say "if you don't use it, you loose it". Like many people think, if we let the government take away even small insignificant right than what's to say they won't keep going. I'm really hoping that by being another open carrier it will help the public and Leos become more comfortable with the concept. Eventually confrontations such as that sound clip will happen less and less (hopefully). I still have some research to do before I actually carry. I don't like being miss informed or uneducated about subjects as important as this. Thanks again and be safe out there

I thought of one more question. Someone who carries told me that if your in a car with other people the gun has to either be in a case or those people have to have a permit as well. Is there any truth to this?

As it is your choice on how you carry, I am curious, other than the rights exercise, of the want to carry it? Are you going to have a magazine available for use if needed?

I am 34 and have never needed a gun. I hope that my firearm never leaves its holster other than to put it in the safe, or shoot at the range. But my philosophy is that of driving. Do you put on your seatbelt hoping that you'll need it? Or do you put it on just in case? Because every time you get in the car and drive off, your chances of getting in an accident increase dramatically. I feel the same about a firearm. Every time I leave the protection of my home, the chances of getting involved in an incident increase.

The Philly confrontation is one of many that have happened in this country since people have been expressing more and more of their rights. The more that people stand their ground, the more "bad" cops will come out of the woodwork.
