Sugar creek LEO's need some education

I went to Sugar Creek on the 4th to watch fireworks. When I got there, there were 2 squad cars in the parking lot. I had checked the muni codes to make sure it was legal to OC but decided to play it safe and talked to the LEO's. There were 3, the quiet thoughtful one, the old one and the testosterone one. Testosterone responded to my question of legality of open carry with, "As long as your shield is showing, it's ok." I told him I was not an LEO (I am always mistaken for one, military bearing and hair cut short or bald) so he followed up with, "Oh, it is ILLEGAL in the state of Missouri to carry without a permit." I asked him if he could quote the law. He said he did not know the statute number so I quoted the number and text of the Missouri statutes and informed him that he may not "be aware" of all of the intricacies of weapons laws in Missouri. He said it was definitely illegal in Sugar Creek so I quoted the codes and text again in the form of a question, "Did you know that ... code says...?" The old (late 50's) cop said, "What are you, some kind of smart ass lawyer?" I had been polite, civil and pleasant and continued so after his question. "No sir", I said, "I am a citizen who can read and I know my rights and the laws of my home, my state and my country. I carry my weapon many places that I go as is my right and habit." I got the usual, "Do you feel unsafe?", and ,"Does it make you feel many?" and several other sarcastic remarks and questions, the usual from old cop and testes cop. Quiet cop just observed. I kept my attitude light and joking and informed them that since they had such a hostile attitude that I would not be carrying into the park since I had my kids with me and that I would take the matter up with the police chief before I came back to visit my friends. They wished me a half-hearted good night and we parted ways.

Be warned, Sugar Creek is not OC friendly... yet! :)

One last thing. Testes cop said at one point, "Besides, state law quashes the Constitution" to which my 16 year old daughter replied, "What the f***???" and I laughed and said, "What she said..." lol... I never taught her to talk like that and I don't do it myself but she was MAD :D

yeah...

You need this, several of us carry them. Only 25 bucks. Takes a great picture and video with audio.

I had my iphone but never got it out. Never even looked at the name badges... this always happens when I have an interesting encounter. Phone dead or left in car or left in pocket... 95% of the time it is in my hand with the video rolling "just in case".

It's ok. I'm going back :)

maybe

Maybe we need a little get together in Ole Sugar Creek?

I was hoping there might be others near by. Maybe at an outdoor cafe close to the police station? :)
Not to anger them but to condition them to get used to legal activity... right? Testes will be quite surprised I bet...

Jim, if you or someone that knows Sugar Creek could pick the easiest to find for an out-of-towner (but I do have GPS) and anyone interested picks a couple of weekdays and weekend dates and time slots that they can make it, we could pick one and do it.
Thursday and Friday (after lunch, about 13:30 on) are good for me. Saturday could work, also, if there is enough interest. And I will have my wife with me who will also OC in the evenings or on Saturday, for those of you who dig girls with guns... lol... so bring a friend!

Just so you know, the following on your list are actually in the city limits of Independence and would actually result in a test of IPD, not SCPD.

Around that area on 24 Hwy, it gets pretty crazy to know where Independence ends and Sugar Creek begins.

I know it has been a few years since anyone has posted here but did anything ever come of this? Curious as I live just 2 minutes from Sugar Creek and bowl there every Monday night at Sterling Lanes.

Nothing happened. Last year I open carried to the 4th of July fireworks show again. I was not harrassed but I never really go close to any cops. They do have a local ordinance against carrying in the park, but I walked down the street and sat within a few feet of the pavement in the right of way where a sidewalk would have been.

And besides, Missouri might be getting pre-emption. Too bad I am moving to Phoenix this month :)
