<raises hand> been OCing around little chute/appleton since last winter, with minimal hassles. I generally keep the holster on (theres a mag holder on it, where I keep the mag) and put the case in back for access thru the hatch. Easy in, easy out....

OC in Appleton (continued)

I carried in Woodman's today. Even though it was very busy, I didn't hear from other customers or any of the staff. There were postings on the entrance about no rollerblades or heelies but nothing about firearms. No problems. I OC'd in Wal-mart in Grand Chute on Mutual Way without issues about 2 weeks ago, but from other posts I've read, there may be a corporate policy against it. I didn't get any hassles at all.

WalMart's official policy is to follow state law UNLESS the manager is anti-rights, then they support the manager.

OC in Appleton (cont)

I went to Best Buy on West Wisconsin yesterday. I knew because they post a security guard that I would have problems. I didn't bother holstering. I went in to talk to the security guard. He laughed at me but did call his manager before telling me that they did not allow open carry, though nothing was posted on the doors that I saw. I'm going to send a note to their customer service and see what kind of response I get. So far, they're the only business in Appleton that I've had problems with.

I think he may be wrong but I'm not precisely sure. You should follow up and contact the district manager. I found this while searching this forum:

Hello Tim,

I finally got a response from our Legal Team. We do not post signs that ban guns from our store and since each state has different laws, we will follow all the state laws and regulation. [emphasis mine]

If you are looking to use aBest Buy store location to host the event, you will need to speak with the store GM and fill out an Event Request form and have the store send the form to Corporate for approval.

So the question is, have you contacted anyone at the store yet? If you have not, I suggest either call the store or going into the store to speak with store management.

Sincerely,

Vincent S. Xiong

Executive Resolution Specialist

It would seem by this letter that their policy is the same as Wal-Mart.

The "guard was WRONG! and the manager was WRONG! Print out THIS letter, take it WITH you and CARRY when you go in the door. If they stop you, present this letter and nicely ask them to call the corporate attorney listed on the letter while you wait.

Then let us know if they apologize.

Carry On

2-127?

Infantrygrunt,

You with the 2-127?

I'm retired now, but was a member of Delta Company, HHC, and Alpha Company over the course of 17 years.

You shouldn't of asked. I have OC'ed in Best Buy in Lake Geneva and Janesville, not even a 2nd look by the security weasel at the front door.

Never ask permission. Look for a sign and if there isn't one, carry. If there is one, report it here and we will, as a group, work on getting it removed.

Support The 2nd,

Would you write a minor thesis on OUR "Don't Ask First" policy and post it and the rest of us will petition Gray of John to sticky this valuable information for all the newbies. .

by security guard, do you mean the guy standing by the monitor that follows girls around the store with his little remote control camera?

I live in Neenah as well. I will OC once the weather warms up so I don't have to worry as much about getting hassled. Any places to OC first to get a feel for it? Anything I should know about un-casing and holstering?

Do a little dance....

Welcome to the forum, xd40! To avoid breaking any of Wisconsin's many confusing gun laws, most of us do it by the numbers:

  1. Exit your vehicle and put on your holster if you haven't been wearing it while driving or riding.
  2. Turn on recorder if you have one.
  3. Take your unloaded, encased firearm out of the vehicle.
  4. Remove firearm from case. Hint: a zippered rug case is handier than the original hard case.
  5. Keeping the firearm clear of the vehicle, set the case inside where it is easy to reach later.
  6. Load and holster weapon.
  7. lock vehicle.
  8. Go about your business.
When you return to your vehicle, reverse the above order, making sure that at no time does an uncased and/or loaded firearm break the plane of the door frame.

After a few times, doing this dance takes less time than it does to read about it.

Welcome to the forum xd40 neenah!

The best places too start carrying with the least amount of hassles are Gander Mountain if you have one in your area or one of the meet and greets with fellow carriers.

The Gander Mountains have been problem free for me and I always seem to get lots of extra help when I'm carrying. If their are any meet and greets near you, my experience is that they are the absolute best way to start carrying. Since there are usually many people with sidearms on you won't feel like everyone is looking at you (they don't even if it feels like it) and it's a great place to get any questions you have answered.

Meet and greets are also a great place to come even if your only thinking about carrying for protection, as carrying is always optional.

When I was living in Appleton for school, I stopped in at Scheels and asked about opening carry around Appleton and the guy at the gun desk told me I was an idiot and that I would end up in jail if I carried. So it kind of put a damper on me carrying over there

He's the idiot. Open Carry is legal statewide. Appleton is not a gun free zone.

Apparently he didn't get "the memo."

I think he missed alot more than just the memo.
To the best of my knowledge Wisconsin always has been an OC State.

That is correct, but being arrested for carrying is where the memo protects us. At least from police harassment...or should...

30 some years ago I had the concealed carry/open carry conversation with the then Capt of the Oak Creek PD while we were reloading some shotgun shells.

For most part Oak Creek would leave ya alone unless someone called it in and complained. The go to charge back then for open carry was "Disturbing the Peace"
Reason was you were disturbing some ones peace of mind or at least that was the City Attorney's explanation.
