I've lived in Missoula for almost 3 years now, and loving MT more every day. A little background on me.

I was born/raised in Elmore, AL, and graduated HS in 1992. Finished college in '95, and met my lovely wife later that year. We married in 1996, and moved to Tacoma, WA in 2003. In 2006, she decided it was time to come home, and we moved back here to her hometown. I've worked in the security field for years, and now work for a local manufacturer of golf bags/push carts. The area reminds me of my rural home in Elmore County, and I love the fact I have a shooting range only 30 miutes away. So far, everyone I've met is friendly, with the exception of a few college kids from another state.:p

I just submitted my CCW application, and just waiting on it to come back. I'm only doing it as a "just in case". When I found out you didn't need a CCW for a vehicle, plus the OC, I figured "Why bother". Wife convinced me to do it to put her mind at ease.

What really blew my mind was the OC here. Alabama doesn't allow it, and I rarely carried in Washington because I worked at a casino with a high vehicle theft rate and a "No Weapons" policy(it was on Tribal Land). I'll admit, I was a little nervous at first, but after getting a few thumbs up from local business owners, it's not so bad. Haven't experienced any negative from LEOs yet, either. As others have stated, be polite, and keep the hands where they can see them. Most people will listen to reason if you come off like a human being and not a putz. :p

Lone Eagle, it's good to see you on here. As MT GUNNY stated, a few of us alternate between OC and CC quite frequently and have had minimal difficulty at all!
Welcome to the state and to the area. Keep us posted on how things go. If you decide to come up here to Kalispell, drop us a line and we'll see if we can't hook up for a quick bite or a cup of coffee or something.

Any Restrictions in Missoula

I understand how OC works but also have been told the law provides for municipalities to institute restrictions within city limits - Does anyone know if there are any specific restrictions on OC in City of Missoula that we need to be aware of. We live in Arlee but I work in Missoula and carry always. Am I violating any specific Missoula ordinances by doing so?

Good general info can be found on the interactive OCDO maps - follow the links:
http://www.opencarry.org/maps.html

Your specific question seems best answered here:
8.58.010 Firearms prohibited in certain public buildings‑‑Exceptions.
8.58.020 Firearmsprohibited in public meetings.

I can't really answer your question, but have another one for you since you live in Arlee. Is it legal to OC on the flathead indian reservation?

I do not see handguns or method of carry referenced, but guns are allowed in one form or another per these excerpts:

It is unlawful to shoot firearms from or across public roadways and/or
public rights-of-way.

Hunters are prohibited from using electronic calls.

The following acts are prohibited while engaged in recreation activities
unless otherwise addressed in these regulations......... Discharging any firearm in a negligent manner or in any campground area.

The following activities involving snowmobiles are prohibited: Possession of any firearm while utilizing or operating a snowmobile.

There is a thread on one of the gun sites that lists some of the indian reservation laws. The two I think about are the Colville IR: no carry outside of a car with out a permit from the COP. WA state CPL not recognized. Warms Springs IR in Oregon, the firearms restrictions only applies to Indians. OR CPL is recognized. so every tribe has their own rules. More here: http://www.packing4life.com/showthread.php?t=8461

Flathead? You can find them online. They are officially the confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe at www.cskt.org Basically, if Montana state law is followed, you are fine, they recongnize a Montana CPL

I grew up in Great Falls. Cascade is 20mi SW of Great Falls.

GF doesn't have a "dynamic" economy, but it never really died, either! Town of about 60,000 people--and it's been 60k since the 1940's or 50's!

Cascade is very pretty--it's in the semi-arid foothills of the Rocky Mountains--the Big Belt Mountain range, to be precise. Right on the Missouri river--good trout fishing--and about 30min to Holter Lake (reservoir) recreation area. Probably not a ton of jobs in/around Cascade, but you should be able to find a job in GF and commute--and be OK on one income.

I was reading the linked Missoula ordinances, and I find something a bit strange there...

Discharge of a firearm is considered a noise problem..yes, I can understand that, and is restricted to self protection within the City limits, ok so far...

But where do they get the legal power to say that discharge of a firearm within 5 miles of the city limits??? falls under this ordinance? I'm sorry Missoula, your juristiction ends at the city limits....If the county has a similar restriction, then OK, but the city ordinance is not valid outside the city limits/

I doubt a MCSO deputy is going to get too upset about you breaking a City of Missoula ordinance....and you won't see a MPD officer enforcing same outside city limits.

A law on the books, yes. Enforceable? No.
