How About a Little Civil Disobedience

Any new "laws" regulating firearms or firearms components should be looked at as direct attacks on our individual liberty and resisted through non-compliance.

It is high time to take Virginia back from the carpetbagging yankee reprobates who have infiltrated and sullied her once-proud history and heritage.

Been saying that for years!

"It is high time to take Virginia back from the carpetbagging yankee reprobates who have infiltrated and sullied her once-proud history and heritage."

They screwed up New York so bad they ran down here, and expect us to allow them to do it again?????

Not a chance!

Sadly, it actually appears they have a very good chance, with so many people stuck on the sidelines and the fantasy-landers voting for folks who cannot win...

:(

We really need to get voters out for our side on this one.

Robert Sarvis could do an immense service to the Commonwealth of Virginia by dropping out of the race for Governor. Sure he provides an outlet for those that like both his message and the chance to cast a protest vote, but at what expense if McAuliffe were to win - that and Sarvis doesn't stand an ice cube's chance in hell of winning.

Sarvis is siphoning votes from Ken C., thereby increasing the risk that Bloomberg style politics will come to Virginia.

Absolutely, and the part of the story that nauseates me is that these Sarvis voters will cast their votes, come in 3rd by 40 points, and feel smug for having "done a good thing."

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals." -- C. It may be a good thing for the tea party in Va. if the vote for Sarvis achieves 10%. However, it might not be an overall good thing for Va if the vote cedes the election to the liberal McAuliffe tyranny. Although, it could be said that those still stuck on the GOP are the ones ceding the vote, if they would all just vote for Sarvis and not for Cucinelli then it would be a positive for Va and would maybe send a message that the pathetic leadership of the Republican party are still choosing to ignore. I believe that Sarvis would be better for open carry, perhaps constitutional carry than Cucinelli.

I think your tag line is fairly apropros for the GOP - "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. I'm very much on the fence about Sarvis. On the one hand I am solid capital 'L' Libertarian, but unlike a lot of Republican candidates Kucinelli isn't somebody I actively detest. I don't agree with everything he's done, but on the whole he's done the right sorts of things in the past. So it's not the true 'lesser of two evils' scenario that it usually is (like the Presidential races have been for the last decade), but clearly Sarvis in principle is the sort of person I would prefer to actually be in office. That's not likely to ever happen, precisely because so many people don't actually vote for the people they want, just against the people they don't want.

The idea of Kucinelli losing by a margin smaller than the votes for Sarvis fills me with ambivalence. Obviously I don't want some tyrannical socialist in power, but at the same time it is only cases like that where a GOP candidate would have won but for the LP that are likely to get the attention of the GOP and get them to pull back from big government and the divisive morality legislation that causes libertarians to desert them. That and it might shake loose some GOP voters who are doing so just because they think voting LP would be 'throwing their vote away' since if they're going to lose anyway, they might as well vote their actual conscience.

Every vote is an endorsement, not just of a person, but also of a platform and a system. Change will not come if we keep just nodding our heads, tacitly endorsing a platform of continued overspending, regulation, and fiat moralism that needlessly destroys the lives of peaceful people.

In light of all this, I'm leaning toward Sarvis.

Debate Tonight, carried live on NBC affiliate stations

From the RTD:

Tonight’s debate key test for Cuccinelli, McAuliffe
For those of you tired of sizing up the leading candidates for governor based on the 30-second attack ads each has aired for the past six months, tonight should be a treat.

For only the second time, Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli will appear face to face in a debate this evening. The debate, sponsored by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, will air live locally on NBC affiliates and public television at 7 p.m.

...

Lurking somewhere offstage tonight will be Robert Sarvis, the Libertarian candidate who drew 10 percent support in the Washington Post poll. Sarvis was not invited to participate in tonight’s encounter.

...

McAuliffe has touted endorsements from 30 prominent Republicans as evidence of his bipartisan appeal, while Cuccinelli can lay claim to endorsements from the Northern Virginia Technology Council’s political arm, TechPAC, and the Republican-leaning National Federation of Independent Business, which backed him Tuesday.

Why would any GOPers endorse an obvious Progressive (Marxist) to be our next Governor?

And here is where I must respectfully but absolutely disagree.

A vote is a means to an end. Period. NOBODY cares why you vote the way you do, the ONLY thing that matters is who has the highest number at the end of the night.

If your justifiable reasons result in the worst candidate taking office, that is the only thing that matters.

If you want to change things about the system or the parties that you do not like - and I am all for that - then you have to do it EARLY in the process, before the primaries or convention, NOT in the general election.

Even after a Nanny Mayor Bloomberg endorsement, you think this applies to Republicans?? Really?

Indeed!

The power to change who is offered as a candidate and what the planks shall be begins waaay before the general election. At this juncture there are limited choices to be made. Make yours wisely and consider the impact.

If, as appears likely with ~40 days until the election, McAuliffe wins then we're going to be in for a painful four years.

HOWEVER, let's not all lose our heads over this. Remember that the General Assembly is overwhelmingly pro-gun and as it stands (and we may gain in the House of Delegates, by the way) any gun control bills would never even come out of committee. Also, remember that the VCDL has been very effective in recent years and that the. NRA and GOA are headquartered in the Commonwealth. Do you really think the NRA would allow any sort of gun control to pass? Doubtful.

That being said, Sarvis needs to stop siphoning votes from Cuccinelli and drop out of the race. Also, the NRA and the Cuccinelli campaign need to run nonstop ads attacking McAuliffe on gun control. Imagine the votes he'd lose over guns. I mean, this is still Virginia after all.

Welcome to OCDO AppealPlay - lots of good folks here. Keep a watch on the stickies for a meet n' greet.

Yes the election makes me nervous, but it is basically the same position Ken Cuccinelli has been in most of his campaigns. I expect him to win, just would like it to be by a commanding margin - sending a message to the antis.

I wish I could be as sanguine as you are but unless the Cuccinelli campaign comes up with something incredible (or, again, runs a TON of 2A ads) I just don't see it happening. I pray that I am wrong.

In any event, thank you! I've lurked around here and THR and whatnot for some time but I decided it is time to participate.
