Recorder Question

I want to record the meeting the 11th at the police department. The question Im having is with the expectation of privacy part of the law. The meeting is to be held in a meeting room, but we have to pass a locked door which requires an electronic pass key. Ive never seen anyone go past that point without escort. Therefore, Im not certain that I could legally record the meeting. Could I record with their permission?

The other problem is that they dont want us to be carrying in this meeting, claiming that it is a secure area. I dont think its the time and place to argue the point, we are after a much more important issue, but I still want to know.

Well looking at the fact you can record phone conversations you have with someone else and do not need their consent because you are one of the parties involved I see no reason why you cannot record it. I also see no reason for them to have a problem with you recording it. What would they be saying/doing that they would not want it recorded.

Auto, If we terminate the meeting, we are going to be stuck. At that point, someone will have to be arrested in order to gain access to the courts. That will have to be appealed, which could take forever. Meanwhile, they will try trespass on the next OCer, then Disturbing public meetings on someone else who OCs. According to a conversation that Army mentioned earlier this year, some WTPD dont think you can OC in ANY gun free zone. Someone could be charged, and have to fight against a charge for OC in a bar, or any other GFZ in the area, not just a school.

Michigan is a single party consent state. Are you an active participant in this meeting. If so, do you consent?

Then you're good.

Justice Corrogan proved this...her meetings were alway in a secured area. The Supreme Court private chambers...

Michigan Supreme court just ruled in favor of Dr. Dre where he secretly recorded(subsequently used in movie) a meeting with police officer Gary Brown after it was agreed no recording would take place. The fact the meeting was with a public official on duty overrode any expectation of privacy.

stainless you might be confusing recording with pistols in secured areas.

Yes I agree with TheQ on this one.
Don't ask or they'll just say no.

I was thinking that they might claim that there is a reasonable expectation of privacy in the secure areas.

They might argue that people make confessions, speak in confidence, inform on people, and prepare for cases in these areas.

Thats an excellent Idea. I have every intention of full disclosure with all you guys on this. I was planning on releasing the audio via youtube, but if we can get it printed in text, Ill post it here. How much $ would it cost for the FOIA?

It'll cost for FOIA whatever the cost is for the least qualified employee to reproduce the records for you.

The Agency MAY wave the FOIA costs.

Do you think there reading this thread??

Let them read. If WPD is not planning to do any kind of provocation to Stainless, then why would they be afraid if someone records this meeting? Not only he should record, but do this recording live through cell phone to make sure that recording can not be destroyed while at WPD.

I dont have a phone that can do that.

you do not need any special phone. Sign up free at http://www.freeconferencecalling.com. You will be given a phone number to call and a password. Just call this number right before the meeting and get it running. The conversation is recorded live. You will be able to retrieve it from secure server later on.
