I wrote this letter to Chuck Allen
"Trooper Chuck Allen, If you are elected Sheriff of Washoe County, would you take down the illegal signage at the front of the Sheriff's Office that prevent citizens from lawfully carrying firearms into the civil areas of the sheriff's office? As a conservative libertarian and 2nd Amendment advocate, I, like many others, take Nevada's firearm law preemption (NRS 244.364) very seriously, and your promise would mean votes in your pocket from me and my many of my friends.

Logic would dictate that if one were to go into a building meaning to do harm, the signs will not stop the bad guy. Only the good guys.

I know you are a busy man with the election coming up, so thank you for your time reading this letter, and I look forward to a reply. "

His Response:
"Once I was assured that employees working in the front office had some
sort of protection from someone firing a weapon inside the building
(bullet proof glass partitions similar to what the NHP building in
Reno has), I would definitely consider removing such signage from the
building.

Thank you for the email and for your service as a reserve deputy, and
maybe we can meet in person sometime to discuss further,

Chuck"

This is good news for Washoe county residents to have a candidate open to the idea of lawful citizens with firearms in the WCSO. Considering his opponent, Undersheriff Kuzanek, was hand picked by by the current Anti-2A Sheriff, I doubt he'd be as receptive. I'll shoot him a letter anyways and let you all know how it turns out.

Happy voting everyone

Sounds a bit waffley to me...either the current front office protections are sufficient or they are not - irrelevant to your question. Either way, the existing signs are illegal.

"I would definitely consider..." Does not sound like a firm commitment to me.

Good luck.

Signage is right on the money, except I wouldn't have added the words "a bit" before waffley.

Well, we could just fill the lobby with open carriers and cameras. I'm pretty sure we'd get some definitive action then.

Oh, so we can't allow law abiding citizens to carry into the front office until there is bullet proof glass? Why is he afraid of law abiding citizens? MEANWHILE...the bad guys CAN carry into the front office!

+1, this guy is an idiot. He must truly believe that signs are a positive protection from bullets equal to bullet proof glass. What a soft shoe shuffle.

Still no response from Kuzanek, but I did shoot Trooper Chuck another email which I'm waiting for a response on now.

"Thank you for your response, I understand your concern for your future employees, but I assure you they would be just as safe without the signage as they would with the signage.

Considering the state preemption of firearm laws, Article 1 Sec. 11 of the Nevada Constitution, and the lack of a statute prohibiting firearms in public buildings that aren't schools, courthouses, legislative buildings, or that have metal detectors at the door, the signage seems to be illegal, and certainly unenforceable. Your commitment to remove it could be an excellent talking point towards your commitment to gun rights, as we citizens feel that they are slipping away every day.

It is understandable that this simple case of unlawful signage has not come to your attention yet, but to ignore this issue until bulletproof glass is installed is to suggest that the executive of a public building can arbitrarily write and, considering the location, enforce laws that are unconstitutional.

I do hope I have been able to enlighten you on this issue and get you to see the seriousness of this issue. Besides, the reality is that the Sheriff's Office will not suddenly see an influx of armed and dangerous criminals filing police reports and applying for CCWs were the signs to be removed, and most lawful gun owners will probably still leave their guns at home when going to the Sheriff's Office. It's simply a matter of recognizing that the SO has been exercising a power that it does not have.

If you would still like to meet with me and speak in person, I would be happy to attend one of your campaign events, just name the time and the place!

Thank you!

I also asked all the candidates about this during the primary election time period.

I have the questions I asked and the responses I got here:
http://washoeweapons.org/vote2014.htm

Kuzanek never replied to my inquiries.
Great compilation of responses, thank you. Hopefully Allen replies and changes his tune, but judging by your correspondence with him I won't hold my breath. I still haven't gotten a kuzanek response either, so he lost any chance of my vote.

Before this goes too far down the road...

When Kirkland was Washoe Sheriff (3 sheriffs ago) & we 1st got shall issue CCW, the Sheriff's bldg wasn't posted at all. I carried in there w/ no problems. There was a sign and a broad white stripe across the floor of the entry to the detention area(jail) prohibiting weapons of any kind past that point and justifiably so. That policy ended when the non-sheriff dept civilian employees (the GSA maintenance employees & union contract, as I remember it) filed a complaint w/ the county manager. It was determined that the county manager/county commission was the overall building/facility manager for all Washoe County bldg and was the sole determiner of posting & signage regarding weapons in county bldgs. It didn't help that Kirkland and the county mgr were trying to cut each others hearts out over funding either.

I doubt the sheriff, regardless of views, has much control over this. I believe the policy would have to be changed by the county commission.

To those complaining about Allen...our only other choice is an anti & a Bloomberg flunky who has ACTIVELY lobbied against gun ownership and for gun control. Do you really want Kuzanek as Sheriff????:banghead:

To those in Vegas complaining about our choices ..... clean up your own toilet first!!!:monkey
Sometimes I think we are our own worst enemies.

I wonder if one were to ask the commission if they will deflect and say it is up to the Sheriff. Maybe the only way to get the signs down is to have both a good sheriff AND good commissioners. I believe Jeanne Herman is a County Commissioner that is a good choice.

Having a good sheriff is half the battle at least. Besides, the Sheriff is an elected official that cannot simply be fired by the County. There would have to be an impeachment procedure and prove some legal wrong doing.

Even with signs in place, open carry must be legally allowed. I have open carried in the Washoe County building (where the commissioners meet) on multiple occasions and I've never been illegally forced out. However, at the Sheriff's office they will eject you if you open carry. So I'd say it goes beyond the Sheriff just following orders with the commission. I bet the current Sheriff would eject people even if there was no sign at all.

All the sign does is lawfully prohibit concealed carry. No sign can lawfully prohibit open carry.

Instead of asking about the sign, which is a non-issue, ask about the policy of depriving a person of his civil rights and the liability it brings to the sheriff.

All interesting thoughts. Only .02 I'm going to add is that Kuzanek was a PAID lobbyist for the NVSCA in 2011 and 2013, meaning he was paid to actively fight campus carry amongst other pro-gun movements that had been opposed by the NVSCA on the public record. And I think there was a move by one senator or assemblyman to enact a 10 round magazine in Nevada that gained no traction but would've been supported by the gun-control advocates at the NVSCA. Kuzanek is a testified enemy of the pro-gun movement, and has said as much in other threads on NevadaShooters and Reno4x4.

At least Allen is willing to have the dialogue with us. If we use the carrot with him instead of preparing the stick straightaway, we might keep him open to the new ideas we wish to propose.

True.

Kuzanek goes back even farther than that. He has been a paid lobbyist (and lackey) for the NSCA and Washoe County Sheriffs Office since AT LEAST 2007 (when I became active in legislative matters.)

http://www.leg.state.nv.us/AppCF/Lobbyist/reports/ListLobbyists.cfm?Paid=1&Session=74

I consider Kuzanek to be an enemy of the people when it comes to matters relating to Art 1, Sec 11 of the Nevada Constitution and the Second Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.

Of course, when paid by the NSCA and Washoe Co Sheriffs Office, he would have to parrot the views of his employers. But could YOU lobby for anti-gun legislation if you didn't believe in it? I have to believe Kuzanek would be an anti-gun sheriff.

True , and let us not lose sight of the fact that these are "VOLUNTEER" positions. You have to be a true believer or a totally immoral opportunist to get these specialist positions. They are not open to just any deputy/officer and with the last 2 WC sheriffs you had to spend a lot of your time on your knees to get one. I know 3 officers that, under the previous sheriff, were "reassigned" & lost their existingpositions until they took early retirement because they wouldn't sign off on the unsafe abortion of a range design at the training center.
