Veterans. And yes, thank you for all of the liberties that you have fought to protect! Let us honor those who have given their lives to keep us free.

And, include establishing or renewing a committment to prevent war.

Honoring the sacrifice has its place. Lets also work to reduce dramatically the number of people who make that sacrifice.

And, let us not forget to honor all the innocent, non-combatant victims of war.

+1

I'm sitting here watching Viet Nam in HD on the Discovery Channel, and I wonder why we go to war? I called my friend Theador and he told me to read War is a rachet, written by Smedly Butler back in the 1930's. Smedley was a two time winner of the medal of honor as a Marine.

And my friend told me to watch this Youtube video.

Thank You and to my other brothers and sisters who have served in our Military, I enjoyed the Veterans Parade today in Yakima and then enjoyed lunch at Applebee's Honoring Veterans.

Big thanks to our vets today. Went up with the wife to drop off blankets and cards at the Beacon Hill VA today. Got to meet some fine veterans from many different generations. They are still accepting people until this evening. I encourage anyone who can make it to head up there.

Citizen Respectfully, I have to disagree with you, today is Veterans Day it is not non-combatant victims day or prevent war day.

"Honoring the sacrifice has its place" Yes it does and that is today.

Please do not dilute the honor of every Veteran in America by introducing other topics on this day no matter how worthy they are.

I see your point, fellas. I did get a little off of my message. My fault.

My message is that it used to be called Armistice Day. It used to be a day to remember the end of the war to end all wars. A neat trick if you want to continue war. Can't have a holiday reminding people that government utterly failed to end war, or even slow down.

So, don't let the war-mongers stir your patriotism, nor enoble war by honoring veterans without remembering the rest of it.

Thank you Orphan. You have heard this before, but I must say it again.
Veterans, when they raise their hand, "I (state your name) do solemnly swear........" , sign that blank check that offers up everything to include ones life. The situation can collect on that check at any time whether it is in kandahar, saigon or downtown bellingham. You never know when the bill will come due. A Veteran, no matter how long they serve, or where they serve, says "Sure, fair trade, my life for the Freedom of the Republic." That is what today is about. Honoring those who stand at Freedoms Gate and say" No, you must go through me first."

Impressive heritage my friend. Looks like your people do that as a Family Business? My Family has been in the same business (Bearing Arms) since the 1600s. Some people sell cars, some people run big businesses. Some people Soldier.

I never forget that my ancestors and yours fought for our freedom. I can never forget that my ancestors and yours stood up and took care of business when they needed to. I never forget that I can not and will not be the one that lets them down. My family has been here since the 1600s as well.

Brother!

Okay, please identify how the modern soldier does ANYTHING to protect your rights.

I was a soldier I cared about freedom. The many of the other soldier who I talked to would have held you at gun point while they disarmed you if they were ordered to.

Some would, most wouldn't. Just because you chose to hang out with dirtbags, don't put that on the rest of us. I've be in the Army for 13 years, almost done being medically retired thanks to the taliban. I've met a few soldiers that would do what you say. I've also know quite a few soldier, lower and senior enlisted and officers that would never enforce such an unlawful order. The people that you are speaking about from my expirience are usually green privates that don't make it very long in the military anyways. The military may be the largest socialist system on the continent, but by and large we cherish the freedoms that this country stands for.

Happy Veteran's Day fellers, raise your glass and be thankful that your alive to be reading this sillyness!

What is all this "soldier" business, do people who can't swim or qualify to fly only think of themselves, too bad for all the other vets, forgotten are the seamen, airmen and marines. :p

Lets not go there. Sometimes tact is better. I'm already accused of diluting for introducing other inseparable considerations. How do you think they're going to feel if you yank the patriotism and do-good out from under them? Its a tricky subject at the best of times, guaranteed to bring out some tomahawks seeking your scalp. You'll be luck to escape with your skin on Veterans Day or on a Veterans Day thread.
