Reeves: "...this is a good gun bill brought to me by some local reputable gun dealers."

This bill requires a S/N check. That is entirely different than "allows."

Follow da money. I'd bet the 'reputable dealers' who brought this bill to Reeves are counting on charging a new fee each time they do a SN check. So basically they use Reeves to get a law passed that gives them a 'required' pathway to make more money on what should be an otherwise simple transaction.

So this bill was made marginally acceptable by changing the original "required" to "optional."

Then our puppet-governor got his hands on it. Hope VCDL sends out an alert on this soon.

Virginia: Governor Returns NRA-Opposed Amendment on Firearm Records Legislation

Governor McAuliffe’s action to SB 377 has deep anti-gun implications. While SB 377 as passed and sent to the Governor requires the gun dealer to destroy the consent form for a firearm determined not to be lost or stolen, the Governor’s amendment would mandate that those consent forms would be kept by the dealer for at least 90 days with no requirement to destroy them ever. Such an amendment would create a backdoor registration of those seeking to sell, trade or transfer their lawfully owned firearms to a gun dealer.

Reeves really was duped on this one, and he still doesn't have a clue about it.

Not sure if Reeves was the only one who was duped. It should have been obvious that McAuliffe lied his way into office and that he is stridently anti-gun. It sure ought to be obvious now. Any bill that is remotely pro-gun that arrives at the Governor's desk is likely to be remodeled into an anti-gun bill.

There is no point in bargaining with someone who acts in bad faith.

And this explains just about everything you ever need to know about why this bill started out horrible and got to be marginally acceptable. I generally support Reeves, I campaigned very hard to help him knock off gun owner hating Edd Houck, but Reeves was completely duped on this bill, and he refused to admit it. Seeing who pushed him to carry it answers a lot of questions.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Senator Reeves passes bill to protect gun dealers
FREDERICKSBURG, Va- Yesterday, Senator Reeves presented the signed copy of Senate Bill 377 to the owners of SSG Tactical, Doug Stockman and Curt Sebastian, in appreciation of their help spearheading this legislation.

Senate Bill 377, will allow gun dealers who wish to purchase, transfer, or trade a firearm from a non-dealer person to submit information on that firearm to law enforcement in order to find out if it has been lost or stolen. For this to occur, there must be a consent form that includes all identification in writing from the individual selling, trading or transferring the firearm to the dealer, as well as information on the firearm itself. As passed in the General Assembly, Senate Bill 377 specifies that if the firearm is determined to not have been stolen or lost, the dealer is then required to destroy the consent form within a two week period.

“Doug and Curt have been essential in fixing this problem that has been affecting gun dealers across the Commonwealth. By bringing this issue to our attention, they have allowed stolen property to be returned to their rightful owners and dealers to protect their businesses from loss of profit and extreme fines,” stated Senator Reeves in response to the bill taking effect.

This bill will now make it possible for individuals to buy and sell guns without the seller falling into trouble, provide the ability to check backgrounds of persons and their guns to ensure safety, reassure the returning of stolen property without penalizing the seller, and it will lead to the growth and protection of small businesses. The passed and now enacted bill gives an optional process for gun dealers to determine if a firearm is stolen or lost through the Virginia State Police, and requires gun dealers to destroy all submitted consent forms for transfer of a firearm determined not to be stolen or lost within two weeks. This legislation will officially take effect on January 1, 2015.

[SUP]1[/SUP] - "allows"? As in not mandated but merely permitted?

[SUP]2[/SUP] - as in just about every firearm they sell or take in for gunsmithing service?

[SUP]3[/SUP] - why is there a permissible delay of up to 14 days? Who needs that much time to get their agent(s) down to the dealer and copy the form - which does not seem to have any privacy protections, not even the minimal ones that the 4473 and VASP analog have.

Quite a bit of spin in that news release. If it was a carnival ride the CPSC would be investigating it for child safety issues.

stay safe.

Senator Reeves loses points in my view based on the wording HIS office chose for their press release. If memory serves me correctly individual senators do not "PASS" bills. They can propose legislation, vote on proposed legistlation and are part of the process to pass a bill into law but do not single handedly Pass Bills on their own.

I like your style of comments - commentary very much! I'll have to try footnotes[sup]1[/sup] sometime.

1. I wasn't aware BB supported footnotes.
