LRT slaying brings call for 'carry' laws

By Mike Cummings, Edmonton Journal May 26, 2010

Re: "Woman's murder rattles LRT riders; Transit officials call shooting 'random incident," The Journal, May 23.

How many more people will die before we act on our mistakes?

It has been suggested by some that we hire armed LRT guards. This won't solve the problem -- criminals will simply wait outside the LRT stations to commit their muggings and murders.

We need is to stop cowering, and give people the right to carry arms. Every state in the U. S that has concealed and open carry laws has seen its crime rate drop.

I'm not saying let's give a gun to every man woman and child; but at least make it possible for someone who is already licensed, has the proper training, and has to deal with dangerous urban environments the chance to be granted a carry permit.

. . .

I second that, what can be done to make Canada (especially B.C.) a more gun friendly environment?

+1

I had some real good conversation with some B.C. residents at Wal-mart just the other day. The guy was totally on board with O.C. and letting people have the freedom and access to firearms.

I invited them to go shooting but they weren't ready for that yet I think.

Yeah. It makes me wonder if there shouldn't be an organized system to present the other side of the coin to people on the gun rights issues.

It makes me wonder if someone shouldn't organize "field trips" and find someone either with an instructors license or with a background that can be respected (military/LEO).

I really don't care for classrooms and books but a community event with a bit of calming instructor time might be enough to get people out of the fear pit.

Or just bring them to the pit make it there are usually families with kids shooting too. Be a good idea to organize a Canadian shooting day down there.

Well you might be on to something there. I've seen a couple communities stated on these forums in relation to Canadian gun rights/firearms organizations.

In theory you could set a date every 3-4 months (or 6 months) and at least have a semi-annual "Gun Festival" and heavily promote it in those communities.

The only things I'm not clear on is the laws regarding toting guns across the border. I would imagine for hunting & sport purposes presenting papers & a quick inspection would be a fair compromise but I have no idea on the matter.

Holy Hell. No wonder those poor Canadian people are shocked when they see our guns. The layers of bureaucracy and regulations and paperwork there are enough to ensure that no Canadian ever gets to shoot anything other than Pilgrim guns & .22's on Canadian soil.

Almost as bad as my application process for a Nexus pass. 12 pages of paperwork asking me about everything from what I drive, where I live, where I used to live, where I used to live before I lived at my previous residence, more phone numbers than I actually own, who I live with, who I date, what I make, why I want to go to Canada.... seriously.

The only thing missing from border security is some shmuck in a hat waddling out of a building in a lab coat to start his own personal bodily fluids collection for my profile. I'm sure its not far out though. </end rant>

That was a pretty short article. Anyways, that's cool. Living in Edmonton this would be cool to see.

Too bad we still have

-Gun Registry
-A lot guns prohibited from private use
-Anti gun mentality

When I tell people I believe guns should be carried & used for self-defense, they look at me like I'm a cold blooded killer.

Just too socialist.

I run into many from Canada here in Bellingham that agree with your point of view, but then again maybe that's why they are on this side of the border. ;)

This article could only ever be published in Alberta. The rest of the country still seems to think criminals will obey the anti-gun laws. Anyone suggesting otherwise must be "compensating for something".

At greater cost than it would take to arm the riders themselves?

Bingo.

Gotcha, Mike: It's about restoring the right to keep and bear arms, and preferrably with as few hoops as humanly possible.

Oh, wait... That would be Constitutional Carry.
