TSA Afraid of Guns

So my mom was heading back to Colorado and while she was here I gave her aTaurus 38 snubbie as a gift. Upon check in she was directed to 3 separate TSA employes, none of which were sure what to do. The one in charge wanted to know if it was unloaded, but said she was not allowed to touch it (true). But the strange thing is that when my mom offered to show her, she said that she was not allowed to touch it either!Hmmmm.

They also asked if she was a "federal employee". Because she is a civil servent for the Air Force she responded in the affirmative. Then they began referring to her as an "agent". She tried to explain that she was just a DOD employee, but she was still referred to as " federal agent".

She said the one thing they all had in common was that they looked at the pistol as if it were a dangerous animal ready to attack them.

In defense of CVG and the TSA,I would like to point out that 2 years ago I checked in my CETME and XD in less than than 5 min. and had a good gun chat w/ the TSA checking me in. That should be the standard.

I took a handgun along on a flight to Florida. My departure was from Madison, WI so if there was going to be any raised eyebrows I figured it would be at Madison. The airline ticket agent simply asked if it was loaded, did not inspect it and did not ask me to show that it was unloaded. I was told to leave the gun case unlocked. Off it went in my luggage. It arrived in Florida locked. Not too surprisingly all our bags arrived with TSA "hand inspected" notices inside them.

On the return flight from Orlando, I told the ticket agent I was declaring a firearm. She handed me a form, and as I looked it over it was clear that she thought I was law enforcement because the form asked if I was transporting a prisoner, etc. That in itself was amusing because I'm really pretty far from that look: beard, hair half-way down my back. I said, "No I don't want to take in onboard, just in my checked luggage." She apologized and gave me the correct form, them escorted me about 30-40 feet to the security check. I showed the gun to TSA, they didn't touch it or ask me to show it was unloaded, they just had me lock it, put it in my suitcase and then wait while the suitcase passed through the X-ray and said I could go. I told my son "I suppose I could have told them that you're my prisoner!"

I have never had any problems. I have flown from Dulles and National in DC, SLC in Salt Lake City, UT, the airport in Orlando,FL, the airport in San Antino, TX, the airport in Atlanta, GA, and you get the idea... Almost forgot Cincinnati, OH!

I go the counter, tell them I'm declaring my firearm, and show them that it is unload. After that, I put the tag in the case and lock it.

I'm then escorted to the X-Ray and she/he tells them I have a firearm in my bag. They run it through while I'm there, and give me a thumbs up!

Maybe it is that I always fly Delta and they train the counter agents well? Delta loves to fly with my guns...:p

There is even a ticket agent that carries now because of our converstation!

My mom recently flew from and back to CVG and had no issues declaring her little revolver. It probably largely depends on the maturity/knowledge of the employee.

Im coming home from California, traveling with my accoutrements of corse. following the usual declaration andform signing session my case of goodies went through the x-ray booth where it was stopped so all the security employees could gather around and gawk (I was out of sight at the time but the story was relayed quite humorously by the young lady who dropped me off) they then, in hushed tones, queried "five? my goodness what does hedo with so many?" when I returned I knew something was up because I was repeatedly pointed out by security personel who were apparentlyspreading the storyand Im sure itwas losing nothing in the telling, as we walked away from the security checkpoint one of the guards leaned over to the young lady and asked "is he from Texas?"

Last time I checked, you're allowed to give/recieve guns from family members or friends, as long as you're of legal age. Here in VA you can even be 18 and recieve a handgun from a family member, or buy one in a bona fide private sale.

CVG = Covington, eh? I've never seen that before, but at least Covington is close.

The airport is not in Covington (KY) at all, but is at leasta city inproximity. Covington is probably 15 or so miles from the airport, with other cities (such as Florence, KY) much nearer.

BTW,the Cincinnati/N KY airport is in Kentucky, for those who don't know.

I have flown out ofCVG afew times over the past year - no problem. It is amusing that differentTSA people do different things, like looking, not looking, etc. My standard thing now is to have itin my luggage, declare to the ticket agent that I have a firearm, and fill out the flourescent (sp?) orange tag that says I am transporting an unloaded firearm.

What I get a real kick out of is showing my Ohio CHL for ID - it has a Sheriff's star in the background (as they all do), and more than once I have simply been waved past the TSA ticket checker who says "Have a nice flight Mr. BB62"!

It makes me chuckle just writing about it.

Yeah, when built during WWII, Covington was the closest city.
