Steve, maybe you can help here. What is stopping NM from allowing county sherriff's offices to take cc applications, like NV does? I have the distinct pleasure of applying in both states, and there's a few things about the NV process that NM could learn from. ( I rec'd my nv permit in 5 weeks). For example, they use electronic fingerprinting. It was simple, fast, and accurate! Not to mention much cleaner! :) They take your photo on the spot (NM uses your dmv pic now, which works too), and make sure you've got everything in order before you leave. It was a very positive experience overall. Oh! One last point, non Abq metro area residents also run the risk of losing critical original documents in the mail. I'd prefer not to trust that SASE!

I hope to get my NM permit by Aug 1st (applied June 1st), excited - but I'm not holding my breath. :p

Please don't hold your breath...

I'm a day or so short of three months waiting on a new (not renewal) permit. August 1 is probably a might optimistic, @linc. Earlier posts lead me to believe it would be about a three month wait. Later posts re the FBI background check holdup makes me think it will likely be longer.

Agreed.

For comparison sake: I submitted my paperwork for a NV permit, and received it 1 month later, almost to the day. My bet is on the electronic fingerprinting. It *probably* helped expedite the FBI investigation process.

My wife finally recieved her's today after a 129 day wait, having to send photos in seperately because they claimed they couldn't acces the MVD photos, and dealing with no response two three inquiries and one rude encounter over the phone with the Dept.

Complaint has been filed with the OIC.

129 Days?

That puts me about the end of August. I understand the department is understaffed and the FBI is slow. One can get a passport in 4-6 weeks -- faster if you pay a fee to expedite. Oh, well...

Out of curiousity, did you file a complaint based on the rude encounter, or the processing time?

She filed the complaint based on the rude encounter/lack of professionalism with the departments response time and then the unprofessional attitude of the person that she finally was able to get ahold of.

A simple response on the status was all we/she wanted and instead she got a rant from the lady about the number of people calling her wanting to know where their permit was, the fact that state workers are required to take a set number of furlough days and the fact that the long weekend (4th of July) was coming up and it was 3 pm and she didn't want to go research it for her.

A local state rep. (that was a signator on the CC bill) thinks that while there maybe some slowdown on behalf of the FBI , there is growing suspicion of a bueacratic baglog being caused by the outgoing governor and cabinet.

I walked my application in April 12, 2010.....

Still waiting.

If I were you I'd be walking back in and asking them FTF what the problem is. They really need to start hearing the complaints if anything is to improve.

Thanks for the Info, AH.74

Doesn't make me feel any better about the wait (since mid-April). Sounds like the CCU needs some more bodies and I, for one, would be willing to pay higher fees to speed up the process. It would be interesting to see the budget figures for the unit. It is my understanding that the fees are used to cover the costs of adminstering the CCW program (the program is self-supporting). One would think, if they are THAT busy, then the fee revenue would support more staff. Oh well, still waiting.

After reading about the turnaround time I was dreading the wait since by the time I could get a class, my CCL had expired. However, I walked mine in on June 30 and I received it August 11. Pleasantly surprised. It still should not require new fingerprints and the license should be issued within a couple of weeks.

< 90 days.!!

I walked my paperwork in on May 28th, and the permit was in my mailbox today. Letter from the dept. was dated Aug. 20th. Pretty close to the 90 days!!!!

Nice to be legal.... Let the carrying begin.!

Right at 4 months...

First post, been following this for a while.

Sent mine in the last week of April.

Check was cashed and birth cert. returned first week of May.

Called yesterday to check on it, the lady said it was issued on 8/23 and should be in the mail.

Just a note, the lady I talked to at the cc unit was very helpful. After inquiring as to my name and social security#, it took her just a second to look it up and give me the status.

Seems to take way longer than it should...

Why do you need a permit to carry a gun people can't see. Unless you tell someone you are carrying they don't know. If you get searched and they find the gun, you probable were doing something illegal anyway. If you have to use it oh well,at least you and your loved ones are alive, small price to pay if you ask me! The bad guy is not going to get a permit before he shoots you! You should Never have to get permission to defend yourself!

This is not the place for this comment/question, if it is even a legit post. The better place for this would be here: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?141-General-Discussion

Don't feed the trolls fellas.
