lol oh so it was my fault? I'll take that. LW is being a jerk, nitpicking over what constitutes a legitimate discussion in his opinion, and using his clicky-clicky powers to jerk people around, so I called him on it. I stand by my statement that he needs to get off it. No one, not even longwatch, has been able to provide a good reason why we shouldn't be able to discuss other topics.

And ya know, I'm not at all surprised that LEO 229 has, like usual, readily mounted the side contrary to everyone else. That doesn't really bother me, though.

What REALLY ticks me off is that he called me DQ. NOW I'M CRAVING ICE-CREAM!! :cuss:

Don't take everything so personally, my friend. I would suggest you follow the adage an armed society is a polite one.

I'm sorry you disagree but this forum is here primarily for open carry and secondarily for the RKBA and freedom and liberty discussions. Certain topics detract if not hurt our primary focus and mission. Hence they are closed. Here is the rub, some of those topics are closely related. So when they are closed, I get complaints that other less related topics are allowed to live.

Case in point the SCUBA thread. I can justify any meetup thread, because surely someone will be OCing, and meetups have made the forum stronger. Unfortunately, if it's just a general chat about a topic as you say it was, I can't let it go on and have any credibility when I close more on point threads.

Careful, talk about LEO's the wrong way and this baby will be closed without warning or explanation.

It shouldn't require much explaination when it's the 4th thread on a incident thats degraded into name calling by both sides.

Hey man, I'm gonna get fat if people keep making junk food references.

With bold type, I emphasised the problem. Let us chat about what we may in the General Discussion area. If something becomes inappropriate (not simply off topic), moderate accordingly. Oh, and don't go around changing thread titles just because you don't think they're clear enough. That's just rude.

Search for "Lon Horiuchi". There were not four, there were three. (Other than this one, now.) Two remain open.
Folks were talking about the shooting of a police officer serving a warrant by a homeowner, with Lon Horiuchi neither were the subject originally posted.

By my count, there were five "general chat" posts about diving, 11 posts about guns and diving (guns that work under water, my question about how to handle your firearm on dive boats, etc.), six posts about a potential meetup and four posts about whether or not the thread was OT. Ignoring the OT discussion, that's five off-topic posts and 17 on-topic posts. Not only that, the last several before you closed the thread were all about guns for or around diving.

Sorry while I may or may not agree with you on what is on topic or if we should allow off topic posting, I like you am a guest here and don't get to decide what to put on the forum. This is John and Mikes forum and if they prefer a more narrow focus, I merely enforce their will to the best of my ability.

As for changing titles, I think it is rude to waste folks time by not being specific about the subject of a thread. Also sometimes as a thread evolves the main idea changes, and an edit makes it clear to new comers.

Are you asking me to reopen it? Because in all this hue and cry no one has done that. If you all promise to try make a meetup happen, I will do it.

IF we promise we'll behave you'll do us a favor? How many times do I have to say GET OFF IT! Look man, I started this thread to see what everyone else thought, because frankly I thought you were being ridiculous. Turns out, most everyone else thinks you're being ridiculous, too. Now I'm asking you to stop the behavior that everyone agrees is just not necessary, i.e. stop locking threads for trivial reasons, stop editing the words of others without their consent, and stop attempting to censor otherwise civil, intelligent conversations for no other reason than you think they're off topic.

If the owners of this forum think you're doing everything perfectly and we need to grin and bare it, I'm sure they will say so on this thread. I see no reason to go running to daddy every time there's a problem, so I chose not to bother them with this. I thought we'd be able to fix the problem on our own. I hope I'm still right.

I'd like to make a meetup happen -- though it will almost certainly take months to organize -- but I'd also like to talk about other issues related to guns, diving and the intersection between those who carry and those who dive.

While I don't contest the fact that this is "John and Mike's" forum, it should also be said that without the posters utilizing it, it would be just a place where 12 or so people of absolute like mind gather in a virtual environment and agree on everything.

I can think of nothing else so boring!

I am a member of several other forums which have a specific section that is for anything and everything (within reason, obviously no bomb making pointers, child porn, white supremists recruiting, etc.) It is still a moderated section, but very loosely in that OT subjects are expected. This way those who are looking for it know where to go. Those who don't want to be bothered with OT topics, don't need to post "what does this have to do with open carry" 5 times a day. I would love to have a thread in which we proposed regional camp-outs to meet one another, have fun camping, talk about matters OC and CC related (and I could also try and weed out who the preparedness freaks like myself are so we could trade tips & pointers) but I never have as I’ve also feared it would be instantly locked down as not DIRECTLY OC related.

As we posters need the forum as an established place in which to meet and discuss, so does the forum needs members for diversity and popularity to continue growing and be successful.

A middle-road solution as suggested above has successfully been introduced at other forums, and I only see positives were it to be introduced here.

it would be nice to have some "general" threads, but as forum users, we know how those tend to go on other forums.

hell, we flame each other and we are trying to accomplish the same thing!

it is a tight rope to walk. the problem is that mod's have it easy when things are "tightened" and only certain topics are allowed. when you relax the rules, you have people whine about why threads were locked, ect. The relaxed rules become a burden on those that volunteer their time to moderate.

While i think it would promote a "social" construct, it can lead to big problems.

You have to admit... had you not said anything.. LW would have moved along and allowed the thread to remain open.. :p

Ya.. LEO 229 is a guy that always seems to pick the other side for some reason.. Why does he do that?? He should just move on!! :D

Maybe LEO is just wired differently and is able to see things differently. Did he explain his position on the matter? He sure did.

IsLEO 229 entitled to his opinion like everyone else?? Absolutely!! DQ's opinion is that LW closed the thread as payback. LEO 299 would agree. LEO 229 also has an opinion that if DQ had not posted what he did.... the thread would not have been locked.

So what was so wrong with LEO 229's opinion. Oh..... itdid not side with DQ!!!

LEO 229 is not a lemming and does not always go with the flow. LEO 229 will voice his opinion no matter how you are going to fell about it.

LEO 229 likes to refer to himself in the third person....

Hmmmm..... Ice Cream!!!!!

"Why does moderation come in waves on this forum?"

A better question may well be.... Why does the need for moderation come in waves on this forum?

Moderation is in direct response to the perceived need.

The little brat of a child keeps acting out... more and more... until finally Dad has had enough, and then little Johnny gets a swat..... and Dad watches him for awhile, with additional corrections...hoping the little brat will learn his lesson.....but does he?

So you're implying that the recent rash of moderations have been justified?
