It's the only one I trust to have my back, you humans jam up alot!
No worries, some people don't deserve courtesy; like those who walk up to strangers and talk about business that is none of theirs...
Because it makes my penis seem less intimidating...
or more seriously - Because I don't fear freedom.
"Well, it just seems like common sense to me."
Even though I've been OCing for two years, I still haven't encountered many confused people about this. 95% of the time if someone says something, it is POSITIVE, and along the lines of:
"Wow, I've never seen a chick pack before." (this remark usually said by a young thug)
or a simple "Good for you" with a smile.
or "What kind of gun is that?"
In fact, I think I have only been asked "why" once. Being a smaller young female who does not drive (I bicycle everywhere - a sarcastic woohoo for spandex!), I figure it is obvious why I am carrying.
Openly carried Gun = very effective anti-creep device
A family friend asked me once why I bought my wife a gun.
"Because I'm scared and compensating for my inadequate manhood. I'm afraid that my giant serpent-like penis won't be able to fend off multiple attackers and protect my family when my penis and I are at work."
They didn't have much to say after that.
"Because I love her."
That would work.
SouthernBoy, great sig! I know what I'd say now - "Because a cell phone won't save my life." That's just a nicer way of saying "Because if I'm in trouble, you guys can't do squat to protect me."In the final seconds of your life, just before your killer is about to dispatch you to that great eternal darkness, what would you rather have in your hand? A cell phone or a gun?

Thanks.
Several years ago I asked a co-worker this same question, substituting "child" for "you". I pretty much knew he was and anti and he was a decent man. I don't recall how the question came up (could have been the VT shooting in April 2007) but I did pose this question to him. He agonized and twisted his face and you could tell he was trying to come up with something that would not compromise is core beliefs.
He finally answered with, "I'd rather neither of them had a gun". Of course, that escapes the essence of the question but in his mind, that was a good answer. After our conversation, I couldn't help but wonder if a situation like that came up what he'd really think.
So his method of self defense is clicking his heels together and chanting "There's no place like home"? Think I'll stick with my M&P.
About two years ago, I was at a local Costco in line waiting for it to open. A little elderly lady saw my sidearm and asked, "Is that a gun?". Because she had a smile on her face when she said this I answered, "Gee, it better be. Otherwise I picked up the wrong thing when I left the house". She then said, "I'm going to stand close to you because I know I'll be safe" and she moved up right next to me. She was from Germany and came here after the war. Nice little lady.
"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!" -Adolph Hitler, 1935
