Alleged shooter to appear in court
JONESBORO — A Little Rock man is scheduled to appear before District Judge Keith Blackman at 1 p.m. today in connection with a shooting on the Arkansas State University campus.
Patrick Rice, 21, was arrested Saturday night after the shooting near the intersection of Danner Street and University Loop early Saturday morning.
ASU Director of University Relations Markham Howe said that the University Police Department was contacted about the shooting at 2:12 a.m.
“University police received a call from Jonesboro police advising that a shooting victim claiming to have been shot on campus was in the emergency room of a local hospital,” Howe said.
The victim, a student at ASU, was treated and released, Howe said.
Howe said university officials notified students and personnel about the shooting through ASU’s emergency alert system. Students and personnel were notified again around 10:30 p.m. Saturday that Rice was in custody.
A booking officer in the Craighead County Detention Center said Sunday that Rice was being held in lieu of bond on suspicion of second-degree battery and possession of a firearm on school property.
Howe said university police were still working on the report on the shooting. The report is expected to be ready this morning.
