Speaking of the coverage of this story, in an AP account and a few others, a (male) witness identified as "Terry Lynn" claims the shooter was rambling and "saying something about the president" or words to that effect. I don't see the relevance other than the media trying to use the actions of this obviously disturbed individual to make a link-- however tenuous-- to political conservatives.
Will be interesting to see what sort of demonization of guns and gun owners results. And as pointed out, none of we LACs could have been within 1000 feet in order to help. I explained to a friend the term "Victim Disarmament Zone" (which I learned here) when talking about this incident because it's a perfect example. It also proves what we all understand. No law PREVENTS a crime when a BG is intent on committing one. It may provide justification for punishment after the fact, however that does little for the victims-- in this case, innocent children who thankfully were not killed, but nonetheless, severely traumatized.
Again, the 626 statute proved useless. What NEEDS to be done is capital punishment for this sort of thing. And those who say that capital punishment isn't a deterrent-- well of course not! That's because how it works now, with endless appeals, the criminal is more likely to die of old age than be executed. If this guy was hanging from a rope by next Saturday, THAT would be a deterrent.
