Being a retired state trooper I can say I never walk up to a vehicle and stand opposite the driver till I am sure I am safe. I always stood just to the drivers rear. If he decides to do something stupid like shoot at me, I have the time to back out of the way. Once I felt I was safe only than did I put myself in a position to observe the interior of the vehicle. Only than woould I be able to observe a weapon on the seat or floor. For that reason I lived long enough to retire happily. Sure do miss the job.
