Both candidates are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on expensive network airtime for sharply-worded political advertising. Davis, the wife of U.S. Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.), is also spending her husband's political money. Her most recent campaign finance reports show that the congressman gave nearly $200,000 in an in-kind donation by purchasing TV advertising time. According to the State Board of Elections, such an ad must disclose the name of the purchaser, but the ad in question states: "Paid for and authorized by Jeannemarie Devolites Davis."
The state senator said the disclosure was appropriate because her campaign paid to produce the ad and to make the initial purchase of air time. Her husband's committee paid for an extension of air time, and she disclosed the contribution as required by law, she said.

Petersen on Thursday accused Davis of distorting his record on gun bills, saying two police groups that have endorsed him do not consider those bills public-safety issues. Petersen has also blasted Davis throughout the campaign for saying she’s a moderate but siding with conservative Republicans when the legislature is in session.
“At first I thought (Bloomberg) was coming to thank her for excluding New York drivers from the abusive-driving fees,” he said at a news conference in front of the Fairfax County courthouse. “But seriously. . . police departments that come into our state need to work with our state police, not go behind their back. Mayor Bloomberg needs to understand this.”

---It's not often that a New York City mayor makes an endorsement in a northern Virginia state Senate race, but Michael Bloomberg is endorsing Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis. Huh? Those moderate Republicans have to stick together, right? And of course it doesn't hurt that husband Tom Davis ran the GOP congressional campaign committee for some years, creating alliances around the country. But a New York City mayor traveling to Dulles to make an endorsement in a Fairfax County election that will draw fewer voters than there are sidewalk vendors in the Big Apple? That's just a sign of how desperate the Davises are to beat challenger Chap Petersen.
---Need another such sign? Check out this new TV ad that Devolites Davis is airing[at http://tinyurl.com/339n7s], accusing Petersen of being "wrong and out of touch... when it comes to guns, our children's safety and illegal aliens." The ad slams the Democrat for voting when he was a state delegate "to allow illegals to attend our state universities."
Is this the same Sen. Davis who told me proudly and repeatedly last month that politicians who are out there this campaign season pushing for a crackdown on illegal immigrants are "demagoguing this to death and creating an atmosphere of hate?" Is this the same Sen. Davis who repeated the line about demagoguing at a debate in front of the Mantua Civic Association?
