It reminds me of the "testimony" in some of the show trials in Stalin's great purge.
There was SO much "evidence" (99.999999% of it total BS) presented against the defendants, that inevitably the fabricators of that "evidence" sometimes screwed up. People would be forced to confess to having been places they'd never been, places where they were documented to have NOT been on the date cited, and places that didn't exist. This reminds me of that.
