I watched a show called "code blue" on cable where this 17 year old kid was shot in the head with a .45 ACP round. The bullet when in just above his ear, rode the skull around and exited out the back of his head. He lived.

I also read a report where a guy was shot 17 times with a .40 and lived for an additional 3 minutes while the ambulance was on the way.

I watched a video where a reporter tool a 7.62 round in the forehead and lived.

the list goes on.

ALL pistol rounds and some small rifle rounds are terrible for killing people with. But it is very rare that a person will keep attacking you after being shot 15 times with a 9mm. That I can promise.
