--snip-- But on the subject of bowling. Does anyone want to try and do an open carry bowling night? I love bowling and Im sure others do aswell. Or has this been tried and crashed and burned?

Don't recall anyone doing that yet in this area or even the state for that matter.

The best way is for 1 or 2 OCers with or w/o a couple of other friends to test the waters at an bowling alley of your choice. If all goes well, let the manager know that you will want to invite a group of friends and what would the best open bowling night (non-league dominated) be - wouldn't mention OC unless he asks. Then you can indicate that you are part of an educational, lobby group who works closely with the General Assembly.....all true.

Once you establish where, then pick a date and time and get a stickie - build it, they will come.

Remember that women and children are golden.

Good luck and have fun.

Carried into Patrick Henry Mall today. I've been looking for Wii Sports for my nephew. He loves the games on there so I had to get it for him. Luckily after trying 3 other stores one of the Gamestops in the mall had it. Had a great time with him tonight with it. I love being an uncle. I looked and I didn't notice a no weapons sign so I assumed it was okay. I had no problems. No one stopped me and I had a nice conversation about new releases with the employees of Gamestop. But on the subject of bowling. Does anyone want to try and do an open carry bowling night? I love bowling and Im sure others do aswell. Or has this been tried and crashed and burned?

Well you are new here so you have missed alot of discussion about these places. Most malls are anti and have some small sign in the mall entrances banning guns. (Same as theaters) A few members were asked to leave and were escorted out of Patrick Henry Mall. If you return OC-ing and they have your name they can ban you from the mall as well as call for trespassing charges if they really want to so don't volunteer your name. Again, many CC or better yet don't give them your business. I have two daughters so I need to go to the mall and try to go to stores that have external entrances like JC Penney, Dicks, Dilliards (OC-ed at all of them) as well as restaurants like Chipotle, Bailey's. I have found that I prefer going to Peninsula Town Center since I can OC everywhere (so far) without worrying about being asked to leave.

I thought about OC-bowling but found the lanes near me were anti also (York AMF). I am not sure about Sparetimes in Hampton though. I wondered about whether the gun on my hip would interfere with my bowling swing and my CC kept hitting me somewhere (don't remember but it was uncomfortable). The worst that can happen is that they will ask you to leave. You used to have to worry about CC-ing because of where they serve alcohol but that went away two years ago or so thank goodness.

Just an FYI, Sparetimes is not in the best area of town so I usually try to take my daughters during the daytime. I think I have heard of shootings or trouble in the past there but can't remember off the top of my head. They have good lunch&bowl specials though. I believe this was the alley that Allen Iverson hit the girl in the head with a chair. :-0

Thanks for the heads up 45. I'll reconsider it next time. And now for an off topic short rant. I can understand that some people are not used to seeing citizens with weapons. Got it. So in order to keep the masses happy they ban weapons from their stores. But to prevent the people who legally carry and make sure they are in full compliance with the law will only leave the ones with no weapons and those who carry illegally. What sense does that make?

Makes no sense at all unless you drink the Kool-Aid.

True antis respond to logic/facts with emotions, not common sense.

Get a fence sitter to listen, talk calmly and smile a lot and some of the logical, detailed facts might get through. Don't expect results immediately though - it may take some time.

Welcome to our world Flippercon.

Actually they're few laws that pertain directly to OC - OC is legal in VA because there is no statute saying otherwise.

If one is 18 yo and not otherwise prohibited, they may carry openly most places. The gun must only be recognizeable as a gun, not of a deception nature like a belt buckel pistol. You can OC on foot, in a vehicle, or on a motorcycle. Sitting in a booth, strong side to the wall or in your vehicle next to a console is still legal OC - the test is how you are carrying it, not were the viewer is standing.

Check out the local meet n' greets - gives you the chance to sit and talk a spell - lots of good information exchanged that way.

You might also want to sign up for the free Va-Alerts Va-Alerts - that'll keep you current on what is happening around VA.

Read the following links and you can do your own searches. Just remember that they laws typically restrict what you "can't" do so there is no law saying you "can" OC which is legal because it isn't restricted by a law.

Welcome to the forum.
There are no laws allowing open carry of a firearm, more importantly there are no laws that prevent it. If you are 18 or over and are not prohibited from owning a firearm, you can carry openly.

Places you cannot carry include K-12 schools, Courts, US Post Offices, Most Federal Property, but not National Parks (stay out of posted buildings).

Others will be along to expand on this soon.

Again welcome, and consider joining the Virginia Citizens Defense League www.vcdl.org At least sign up for the free news letter.

OC'd to La Parilla and Ninja(hibachi) in Harbor View, Bubba'n Franks in Carrollton, Food Lion in Windsor, The Grille and Royal Farms in Smithfield, Home Depot and Northern Tool on the peninsula. No issues but the cook at Bubbas jokingly asked me not to shoot him. I complied :)

Okay, I have a question on this particular link
http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...cod+18.2-287.4.

Is it legal to open carry loaded? I know it says "It shall be unlawful for any person to carry a loaded (a) semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol that expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine that will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition" . So if my magazine holds 13 I am ok?

This is one of the weird code sections.
You're ok at 13 round mags. Note that the 20+ round mag restriction is only in the localities listed in the statute and only applies to semi-auto centerfire firearms. Isn't there a Keltec pistol that is .22lr and has a 30 round mag? It would be legal in those localities. Also note there are exemptions to the restrictions listed in the statute. Perks4Permits. :uhoh:

I am picking up my pistol tomorrow after work. So my first time is gonna be tomorrow. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

Cannot suggest too strongly, that you put at least several hundred rounds through your new gun before depending on it's reliablity. Doing this not only provides a break-in function, but insures that everything is as you expect it. Some guns have a decided preference or dislike for certain brands of ammo too.

Personally, I like the 500 round standard, but these days that is becoming more difficult economically.

I have had guns that never hiccuped from the day I bought them and I have had those that even the factory never got right to my satifaction.

I do have 200 rounds to shoot tomorrow of 4 different choices I have been reading up on. Heading to the range after work to break her in.
