Last weekend I rode my bicycle to an Nirvana, an indian restaurant, for lunch buffet. One of the workers noticed my sidearm and asked me about it and we spoke for 30 seconds or so, but unfortunately I didn't have any flyers on me because I was worried they'd come out of my pocket while biking. He asked if I was carrying as a deterrent while biking (to fend off unruly drivers presumably?). I told him no, I just did it to remind people that they have the right to and for personal protection. It's interesting that the two Indian places I've been to have both spawned a conversation regarding carry. Maybe their courts announcement regarding Indian rights regarding carrying arms has it more on their minds?

On Wednesday I went to a Thai food restaurant right across the street from OSU. On the way back I walked through the park to the east of the main part of the OSU campus, but was technically still walking on university property. No issues.

On Thursday I visited the Wells Fargo in Philomath to talk to a banker for a little bit, no issues.

Yesterday I got a sandwich at the Old World Deli in downtown Corvallis. On the way home two guys around 20 years of age were riding their bicycles down the road in my direction. As the second one passed me I saw that he was staring at me. He then shouted to his friend and started talking about how I was carrying. They continued on their path but definitely looked back a few times. Last night I went to the Fedex/Kinkos to make some copies, no issues.

Today my friend and I both carried and handed out Ron Paul flyers at the farmer's market. No comments despite handing out 100 flyers in total. I spoke to a local pedicab driver for a while and introduced myself as the guy who carries a gun everywhere. He looked confused and asked if I was carrying at the moment and I looked down and replied in the affirmative. He was surprised he hadn't noticed. A Corvallis PD officer walked within three feet of me while I was handing out flyers. I didn't offer her one, but she didn't seem interested either. No issues with the firearm, but the farmer's market manager asked us to not be in the middle of the market handing out flyers. Apparently people can sing songs without a permit or paying for their space, but handing out political flyers gets complaints. She was pretty friendly and we agreed to move to an entrance/exit point. I need to research case law for first amendment and public space when permits are involved. Off the top of my head though, it seems allowing singers and not political flyers is a lot like prior restraint based on content (although no state action).

Overall a good week.

Carried to city council meeting today to educate my self on how the meeting process works. Made entry took a seat and was approached by a GPD(Gresham Police Department) officer to step out with him. I get the usual talking to about how I am scaring people and that they feel that I am testing the response I get.... They let me back in after city attorney researched the law regarding carry in public building. They also asked me to put on my suit jacket to cover my firearm, which I personally agreed to do. While I didn't need to, its the little steps that count.

After I sat back down, I couldn't twitch without the officers looking in my direction. I handed a pamphlet to one of them as I was leaving and said thank you. They even were nice enough to escort me to my car (staying about 5 car lengths from me) and wait for me to leave, thanks tax payer money! :)

I must say it was a much better experience this time than what I had before. One of the officers slightly remembered me from contact with them last month. It feels like I am making progress out here. ( some what)

"GPD" is?

And the reason they "escorted" you to your car was probably so that they could run your plate and get an ID/address. Did they use ORS 166.382 (allows them to inspect a firearm in public building) or did they not get any ID/CHL during your "disussion"?

We all handle these things differently and are all willing to cooperate or not cooperate with intrusions t varying levels so not criticizing your handling, however...

I think I would have declined the officers REQUEST to step outside and have a CONSENSUAL discussion. If he wanted to insist on inspecting my firerm I would have offered to provide CHL (makes it legal to have the firearm and have it loaded but doesn't exempt from the 166.382 loaded inspection). If he still wanted to do an inspection after being informed it was legal (due to CHL) then I'd have enjoyed explaining on audio and loud enough to be easily overhead by those nearby (but not raising my voice) how HE was placing everyone at rsk by handling a loaded firearm in a crowded location but that if that's what he wanted to do I would comply with the law but would not be stepping outside. He may have the right to inspect it but the law does not give him authority to do anything else includng detaining beyond the load inspection or arresting me. In fact, ORS 166.282 prohibits arrest under ORS 166.250 (concealed) and 166.370 (public building) if the person has a CHL in their possession.

Then again, I'm kind of an ass when people start playing games with my rights and liberties.

Thanks for asking, I should of clarified on that part. GPD = Gresham Police Department. I edited the other post to reflect this.

As I got outside with the officer, I told him that I could carry in a public building with a permit(CHL) and he asked to see it. I started recording audio/video after so I have it on tape. They did not use ORS 166.382 on me nor was I disarmed.

Maybe they were following me because I removed my jacket after I left the building or maybe it's because I dropped my keys in the parking lot and could of hurt myself picking them up. I know they worry about my safety.

Well they didn't follow you to the car to get your ID then. Good on the audio...keeps 'em honest.

Today's carry:

First stop ARCO on highway 62 (Medford), went into the store and stood back from the counter like everyone does while waiting on their gas to be pumped. There was a funny noise and I asked if they needed to feed the squirrel, got a chuckle and she said no, it was the safe. I mentioned they needed better security since they deal in a TON of cash and she agreed then pointed at my FN 5.7 and says "That's a nice one, what is it" so I explained what it was and how it fired a rifle round etc. and she asks "can I see it". I say "no, it doesn't come out of the holster" and she says "oh yeah you don't want to be pulling a gun out in a covienience store". Anyway it was a good positive encounter and there were several other customers waiting for their fuel to come up so great to have them see that there's nothing bad about a guy carrying a gun and the gal with the money wasn't concerned and that it's a non issue.

Then I went to Pets Mart and though that if I was going to have a problem that might be the place as there might be some animal loving (which is fine) peace-love-happiness left leaning anti picking up some foo foo for their little boo boo. Nope, no problems, got some assistance from a clerk to find my purchase, and headed out the door.

Sportsman....never a problem there.....well except this damn big black KOOL looking rifle kept calling my name. Chambered in Lapua 338 Magnum......SWEEEEEET....but I grabbed some Claey's candies and left teh rifle sitting there.

WalMart for groceries and yeah, I checked their long gun case picked up a good T shirt for college......"Proud Supporter of Gun Control....The one with the Biggest Gun is IN CONTROL".

Picked up smokes at the corner store and headed home to look up that SWEEEEET rifle. WOW....

Okay deleted all the drools over the capabilities....this site is about handguns......before I hit send. I'm getting better. LOL

i also carry here frequently and have never had an issue..... totally professional staff and the customers are too busy worrying about fido's favorite nylabone flavor to notice anything.

Which Wal-Mart? My friends and I have had complaints and problems at the one next to Costco.

The Super WalMart in Eagle Point. I have carried often in the WalMart nar CostCo and never had an issue. When did you have an issue and was it with a customer or the store personnel?

It was with the personnel, we work in private security and we even had our security badges on and they asked us not to open carry in the store. All we did was un-tuck our shirts, to "conceal" and the employee was fine with that. This was a month or so ago before I found this forum and was educated on the OC laws.

I've found that what works best with Wally World is to get the District Manager's contact info and either call or email him/her. The one over the Wal Mart that I got kicked out of straightened out his store manager and, when we met in the store, apologized for his manager's actions and demeanor.

Guess I'll have to make a point to use the WalMart in town if I'm down that way anyway.

Had a friend cited for her handgun here in Jackson County. Haven't seen her yet to see the acctual citation but she says the handgun was ON (not in) her center console and that SHE called the police as she was being followed home from her work by someone (late night). Not sure what agency though she said sheriff deputy, nor what the citation was for but apparenty the officer told her "if you go apply for your CHL within 10 ays this will be tossed".

She went in to the court to talk with the clerk, who took the citation back to the Judge and he tossed it and said "this is a waste of the courts time".

She's going to stop by with the citation and such when she gets a chance. It will be interesting to see what it says and what ORS she supposedly violated. I'm guession 166.250 and a deputy that doesn't know the law. I'll also be giving her an OC pamphlet to keep in her car.

I'll post an update when she remembers to bring the thing by.

Did another open carry litter pickup this afternoon. Picked up trash on a couple of blocks that I hadn't done yet, had a couple of people thank me, although they didn't specify if they appreciated the trash pickup or the open carry. I like to think it was the latter. I also carried yesterday when I walked my fiancee to work. No issues.

OC in Phoenix

Open carried today at the Phoenix Festival, several LEOs there, no problems what so ever. I got a few funny looks but I like to think it was because I'm in a sling and carrying a gun. One of the shop owners asked if it was real, and I said of course it is, and gave him pamphlet and we chatted about the laws and dos and don'ts. I then went into the Si Casa Flores with my wife and 5 month old son. Got a few rude comments from the neighboring table who were older folks and they were just utterly shocked I would open carry with a new born around. I just blew it off as yuppie garbage. Then we went to South Fred Meyers and got all kinds of weird looks but no complaints or concerns and the electronics employee treated us as we were no different. All in all, it was a super hot but good day for open carry!
