Baker St John are in Gilpin Court (Hospital street runs through it, but I'm not sure the block listed is in Gilpin)
As for the ones who don't know, a 'Court' in Richmond is a government subsidies housing project initially designed for the single females with children. In richmond there are 6 of them(Gilpin, Wictcomb, Hillside, Creighton, Fairfield, Mosby) of which a lot of the crime in the city takes place(or with in a block or two of them).

Gilpin, in particular is a nice location for more student housing and annex facilities for VCU. Last I heard they are not 're housing' people into vacated units there as their overall wish is to sell the land to VCU. As we all know VCU is an extreme presence in RVA and is a large revenue machine for RVA.

Unfortunately as fun as it is in the Fan and in Cary town to hang out, go house parties, bars, etc, there is a dark side to the city which is showing its true face. Richmond in the past decade has really turned itself around, in the late 90's into 2000 Richmond was the highest murder rate per capita in the country. Although I am not familiar with other statistics, the recent actions have shown that although things might have got better before, does not mean they can't reverse and go the other way.

Which leads us to why this topic was created. Students who come from Suburbia where the worst thing you could do is stay out too late for curfew, have a rude awakening. Gun/Knife point robberies, 'jumping' people just to get their cell phone and some cash, car thefts, you name it, where there are easy victims, there will be criminals to attempt to take advantage.

Welcome to the fray reddn.

This thread/topic was created not simply to warn students that they're stepping into a different world, but to demonstrate that they are being systematically deprived of the ability to defend/protect themselves by the City of Richmond, VCU PD and the administration/leadership of VCU.

The SCCC hasn't exactly been met with an enlightened attitude regarding crime and violence in the area by those charged with providing a good educational experience. Instead the students (& staff) have been treated like 2nd tier citizens who must be fed the old dogma that "we know what is best for you."

The issue has been a "hot item" and the means to controlling violence has been well known and documented, yet the school refuses to do the right and honorable thing - allow the natural right of self-defense. It is the staff and students that pay the price. That VCU hasn't had a tragic, major event like Va Tech, Columbine or Sandy Hook is not due to the preparation/participation of the school, but rather to the whims of fate.

Gilpin Court.is mentioned a lot in those lists. The cut off for this thread should really be in the vicinity of Adams and Leigh Street. Abnor Clay park is a regular spot for VCU students.

I have tried to modify my subscription to no avail - thought of reducing the search parameter to one (1) mile, but that would then not include the MCV campus.

From the best I can tell these stats are only from the city files and do not include VCU PD, Capitol Police, ABC Agents or other state property where either the Capitol Police or VSP investigate incidents. In addition the data includes neighborhoods not even close to VCU campuses. This is the problem with collecting data and statistics. It also appears not to include many misdemeanor or released on summons offenses. It does give people something to talk about and provides a false sense of well-being, hence the reason for this post. You should cover all your bases and watch your "6" at all times.

Never purported this to be all inclusive Kenny; however, I think the data does define an extremely high crime area. The search parameter (2 miles from VCU's epicenter was selected because it includes MCV and other neighborhoods where students frequent - also suggests where some of the less desirable neighbors do their work.

Would be obliged if you'd like to add any findings you have to this thread.

"Something to talk about"? "A false sense of well-being"?

Watching your "6" might have more merit, if adult students and staff had the means to protect it. :uhoh:
