Jizzle:
First I will say that it has been quite a while since I even looked at any Magic cards, much less played, but I think your audience and its setting has given you the perfect way to approach the issue! here goes:
Each Magic card has a certain ability, defense/attack/etc. also, there are 'equipment' cards. And I'm sure that most of the people that you play with build their own decks... Ask them all to please remove all 'equipment' cards from their decks before you play your next match! If I know anything about MTG players, this will be quite an offensive suggestion, but will give you the perfect segway into why you carry a gun! You could even take it further into the different types of decks (colors) being different types of people, the average unarmed person being a pure (white?) deck that is no match for a Red Rage deck, and the average defensively armed person being a good mixed deck ready for whatever the opponent puts forth! I'm sure someone there has the 'unbeatable' Rage deck (I know I used to have a really good one) that will easily equate to a bad guy and someone else that has a good multi that puts up one heck of a fight (if not occasionally wins) against said 'Rage' deck...
At any rate, I think you get my point, even if my recollection of the finer points of the game are a bit rusty!
As a teacher, you obviously understand the importance of tailoring your lesson to your students specific needs/understanding.
Good Luck!
BTW: without me having to dig for it, how did the theater deal ever turn out? Or is it still in progress?
