The District Attorney’s Office has dismissed a case against a woman who said she
fatally shot a man in self-defense inside her Alcalde home.
The Journal North reported Friday that District Attorney Angela “Spence” Pacheco
dismissed the case without prejudice on Friday afternoon because the case needed more
information. She did not elaborate.
The Los Alamos Monitor previously reported that 35-year-old Kaiwee Martinez was
arrested Thursday and booked into the Rio Arriba County jail in Tierra Amarilla.
Rio Arriba Sheriff Tommy Rodella said she was charged in the Nov. 3 shooting death of
33-year-old Lawrence Sandoval.
Martinez claimed Sandoval barged into her home and tried to undress her at knife
point. She said she grabbed a gun and shot Sandoval in self-defense, then fled and
called 911.
Rodella said authorities do not believe Martinez’s story, and the Journal North
reported that a search warrant affidavit stated the fatal shot entered the back of
Sandoval’s skull, though Martinez claimed Sandoval was on top of her when she shot
him. Also, the two reportedly had been seen together at casinos in the Española area.
