Crime in Canada

Hey all,


I've been curious about how much crime there is in Canada. I'm not going to bother looking up statistics since they're often skewed (at least they are here). From what you've seen/experienced, do you guys have many shootings, assaults, armed robberies, murders, home invasions, rapes etc.?

Over here all of the above happen frequently. Our strict gun laws obviously have not worked and I'm wondering if it's the same case for Canada, even though your gun laws are far better than ours.

I understand you have the right to self-defense with a firearm, we technically do but it is a very, very grey area, meaning defending yourself with a firearm is basically illegal in 99% of circumstances.

I live across the border from British Columbia, and there is quite a bit of crime up there, especially it seems the Surrey area.

I worked on a house for a Canadian couple, who were robbed 14 times at gun point in BC, they had a gun permit, but had to keep it locked up in a safe and so it was fairly ineffective for defense.

14 times?? What were they doing? Fences and medical marijuana dispenseries don't get robbed that much. I think your canadian friends are either a) exagerating b) involved in something crooked c) the most unlucky people in all of human history....

Yeah, surrey is bad for sure. Mostly the problems are related to a specific ethnicity, (trying not to sound racist)

With the exception of the surrey area, and a couple specific larger populace cities, most towns don't have "crazy" crime rates. Since most smaller towns are rural there's a lot higher gun ownership which I'm sure has to have something to do with low crime rates.

In terms of self defense, its basically this: if the bad guy has a knife, you can use a knife. If he has a bat, you can use a bat. If he has a gun, you can use a gun.
Its stupid. I won't argue that. But I can say that if my door is ever kicked in, I'm not checking to see what he's got before I get my shotgun.

Our charter of rights (similar to the US constitution) says that we can use whatever defense we deem necessary to protect ourselves, but unfortunately our courts and the majority of the population (new immigrants) don't see it that way.

There have been cases (quite a few) of people successfully defending themselves or their homes with a firearm, but what the crown (governemnt prosecution) tries to nail them with is "unsafe storage" of said firearm. Since according to our [stupid] gun laws they need to be locked up at all times execept for "display", or "use in an authorized area", or in "transport".

Changes (sounds like they'll be good ones" are supposedly in the future, but it could all go downhill (complete ban on handguns and semi-automatic weapons) if the liberal government gets in, in a couple years from now.

I know the Indian community were having major problems in Surrey. I work for and have a lot of Indian friends, they are not afraid of discussing the problems in their community and neither should anyone else.

For awhile there was a big fight on whether or not to sit in a chair or on the floor in their temple. People were getting shot over it.

I'll go ahead and say that if you're ever curious as to what an Arizona winter feels like (not as cold as you may experience up there), or for some reason decide to stroll on down to the Arid Zona, don't hesitate to let us know so we can plan a small get-together. DW98, I'm sure, remembers a similar invitation.

OT: Does any area of Canada still limit the number of rounds a legal magazine can hold?
Also, are you required to keep the ammo and gun separate (besides locking the gun up into near uselessness)?

You can keep your guns and ammo locked up together.

It's 10 for handguns here as well. Although we can only get a max of .45, but you can shoot .50's at ranges. Is it 5 for semi-automatic rifles in all cases? Last I checked semi-auto's in my state had a mag limit of 20. In other states you can get 30's. There's one state where they allow unlimited drum rounds for hunting. The Northern Territory apparently doesn't have a mag limit either.

How hard is it to buy a handgun there? Since 2002 it's been made very difficult to buy one here. In my state it takes around a year of going to the range to compete in shooting competitions to prove that you have a genuine reason for owning one. After the first year only then you can buy one, and only a small caliber one at that for the first 6 months. It would take about a year and a half to get a Glock or Beretta. After you get your handgun license you can buy one every 48 hours.

Just certain calibre (larger) that have restricted mag sizes.
Pretty easy to buy a handgun, only have to get your license, have proof of a gun club membership and your good to go. You can buy as many as you want. I think if you buy 50 or more at one time they'll ask why, but obviously its for "collecting" :lol:

Sad that our similar historical backgrounds founded on rights of Englishmen including to bear arms have been greatly eroded. They are working on it here in US too, having a strongly worded constitution helped out a lot.
