Hi guys, I saw that Ed posted this in another forum and it made me think about an event I am hosting in June.

§18.2-308 (J.3.): No person shall carry a concealed handgun onto the premises of any restaurant or club as defined in § 4.1-100 for which a license to sell and serve alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption has been granted by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board under Title 4.1 of the Code of Virginia, nothing herein shall prohibit any sworn law-enforcement officer from carrying a concealed handgun on the premises of such restaurant or club or any owner or event sponsor or his employees from carrying a concealed handgun while on duty at such restaurant or club if such person has a concealed handgun permit.

In June I am hosting a fundraiser for The Avon Foundation Walk for Breast Cancer. The event is at the American Legion in Lorton and there will likely bea fair amount ofdrinking involved as the basis of the event is a Beer Pong Tournament. Now, I will be 6 months pregnant so I obviously won't be drinking and I dohave a concealed carry permit.

I am the host and organizer of the event and am paying for all supplies and costsupfront out of pocket. But, I don't know if I amlegally considered the 'sponsor' or would I have to be an employee of the charity?

Ed or anyone, is there any further definition of sponsor, what are your opinions?

Thanks,

Harper

well.. MY OPINION and $4.00 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.. That said.. From what you said.. "YOU ARE HOSTING and EVENT". That tells me that you are the event Sponsor.. if you are "on duty" as the sponsor while running the event.. then my GUESS is that you would be ok. I am not an attorney.. but if that were MY event.. and I wanted to carry.. I would do so comfortably (except for the 6 months pregnant part)

Actually, I don't think "comfortable" and "six months pregnant" belong in the same sentence regardless (except this one to point out that they don't belong together).:p

There maybe a reason that you don't want to be the sponsor, its the question of liability. Don't know how your setup as an organization, but one of the things that you don't want to be is personally liable as the event sponsor if something happens as a result of beer pong. They maybe your friends, but if someone else gets hurt or family/insurance is involved, things can go bad fast.

You alsomight want to hire an off duty LEO or bring your own bouncers to keep things orderly.

Best of luck in your last trimester!
