This is a huge shock to me. I'm at a loss for words. I'm filled with regret that I didn't get to see him one last time before he left us. He was a hell of a curmudgeon, yet one of the kindest souls deep down. He helped me a lot with knowledge and experience. I will forever cherish time spent with him.

There is a profound message there.

Never miss a chance to give a smile, say a nice word, or hug and kiss your loved ones. Opportunities wasted are gone forever. Miss that bus and you'll be standing in a cold rain with a pocket full of regrets waiting on a bus that will never come.

The saving grace is that Don knew of the love we all had for him and he appreciated it deeply.

It is an end to an era, but not to his story. His legacy lives in each of us who were ever touched by his words or deeds. He left us our marching orders and we cannot let him down.

Indeed, he was both the consummate Ol' Virginia gentleman and the steely eye lobbyist who could devastate the opposition with a few well-chosen words. He was well known and respected in the offices and conference rooms of the General Assembly. He sent shudders through Richmond City Council when he entered with his press credentials and camera.

Don did do magic with his lenses. Someone should publish his work/pictures. He loved to preserve the beauty that he saw and share it with others. He brought joy to many of us this way.

Don was a highly skilled educator of RKBA and particularly OC. He led by example, not just mere words. Who can forget his Ferry Tales - he worked to pursue justice including serving summons. He gave of his time and money, asking for nothing in return. He gave credit to others, yet neither expected nor wanted any recognition/reward for himself.

He would walk into a restaurant and the owner and staff would call him by name plus know what he was going to eat. Don thought black, doubled brewed coffee was a basic food group.

That so many people knew and loved him is testament to his life

My heart is heavy, but I'm relieved that he no longer hurts.

Brother Don, you have earned your place in heaven. I miss you.

I know the feeling. Skid called me Monday afternoon to tell me and caught me completely off guard. Don had spoken on speaker phone to those of us that attended the dinner at Bennys just a couple of weeks earlier and he sounded better than we'd heard in him in quite some time, we seriously thought he was on the long road to recovery and were starting to discuss options for a dinner in Mechanicsville in May so he wouldn't have to travel far

I've met Peter a few times at various political gatherings, and had the chance to observe him in action with his camera. He knew how to maximize opportunity in any situation without being obnoxious. (I know some on here will dispute that.) He was always straightforward and candid. What you saw was what you got. Peter was the real deal.

I'll miss his candid wild life photos. Somehow, I think his bears will miss him, too.

I had the great honor of meeting Don twice, I'm sure it was nothing big to him but to me it was. What he has done for Virginians cannot be expressed in words, not just 2A but the entire Bill of Righs and then some. His great wisdom on the forum will be greatly missed. A true Southern Gentleman !

In my opinion, Don was the epitome of a true “Southern Gentleman”. He was kind, gentle and thoughtful, yet strong and unflinching when the situation called for it. Don was a force to be reckoned with, and a wealth of information to those that were smart enough to seek his council.

Many times on a Saturday morning, I sat and listened and LEARNED from this wonderful man on a multitude of topics. His experience and wisdom seemed to be as unending as his patience for my questions and ignorance. He educated me, and never complained or made fun of my naivety.

I will miss him, but I guarantee, I will never forget this great man.

We will begin making the stew @ 5:00 a.m. on the 14th, paddle jockeys needed to keep the stew from scorching. Much more info to come. Have to call the Grapester right now and we will hash out the details.

When - Fri. May 13[SUP]th[/SUP], 6:00pm - Chop night, set up and preparation, cooking pot w/accessories weighs a lot - one person cannot do it.
...........Sat. May 14[SUP]th[/SUP], 5:00am - cooking, stirring, dispensing, cleanup, general tending.

This will only work if people are willing to help, give of their time. Many hands make light work. Each batch produces about 50 gal of this delicious Brunswick stew or 200 quarts. Sidestreet has pre-sold 79 qt. already!
Pre-sales are $8.00/qt, and day of sale at $10.00/qt.

This stew is so thick that a spoon will stand up straight in the middle of a bowl - it is famous in these here parts.

Arrangements will be made for anyone to donate to reduce the expense of supplies. Also an account will be established to allow direction of funds to the family to defray the horrendous expense of Don's medication, funeral expenses, much needed repairs to the home, and other critical shortfalls.

I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing. He was an amazing photographer. I never saw him without a camera over his shoulder (or already set up to record a government meeting), a pistol on his hip and a cigarette burning nearby. I'm especially saddened because my mother died on the same day, a few years before (1995). Peter never failed to share an amusing or interesting anecdote whenever I saw him. I especially remember his attendance at a meeting in Yorktown where he recorded the meeting.

He will be sorely missed...
