Los Padres Nation Forest OC

I have been "snowbirding" in Santa Barbara.
My usual habits concerning OC'ing have been greatly encumbered.
At least I have the back country. It's legal to carry in the National Forest, right?

Had a meeting with District Ranger, Mr. Douglas Dodge.
He seemed sympathetic to my plight of convoluted if not cryptic California gun laws.
I spewed a myriad of point blank question of which he could not readily answer.
He told me that he has a consortium of lawyers at his disposal ( state funded ) and that if I write a formal letter,
He would pass on my questions and write back with the appropriate answers.

I am complying that list now.
My question to all my fellow OC'ers is....
Am I omitting pertinent questions?
Am I doing more damage than good?
Anything else to add?


Outside of a vehicle, is it legal to open carry a sidearm in the Los Padres National Forest?

Outside of a vehicle, is it legal to conceal carry a sidearm in the Los Padres National Forest?

The same questions pertaining to rifles.

Is it legal to carry in "Shooting Restricted Zones".

Is discharging a sporting arm in "Hunting Zones" only legal in the attempt to kill an animal?

Is it true that a non California resident has no duty to register sporting arms with local authorities as long as their stay does not exceed 60 days?

Is it true that a non California resident has not duty to show proof that arms in possession are indeed their personal belongings?


This is just a start. Any feedback is appreciated.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to give you my answers, but of course double check any answer you get...especially from .gov in CA...

One question you absolutely need to ask with regard to Los Padres National forest ... Lead Free Ammo. LPNF is home of the national California Condor preserve as such, there are some weird regulations about lead free ammo in this 'zone'

I know for certain the regulations pertain to hunting...but I've heard they may have larger ramifications.

I wouldn't dream of using lead ammo in the National Condor Preserve.
I am one of the few who has actually seen a condor in the wild.

Another question.
I know that while camping in a campground, or any temp housing, castle doctrine and property rights apply.
Thus making it legal to LOC. What about in a RV where I have access to the living quarters from the driving compartment.
If I am temp living in it, isn't it legal to have loaded arms, unlocked, even when driving anywhere in the U.S.
Of course, I would have a lawyer on speed dial.

I've had the privilege to see them in the wild on a few occasions. The first was as a boy scout many moons ago when there was only know to be about 3 remaining.

In CA you are clearly covered in your immediate campsite. Its basically the same thing as a hotel room. There are clear exemptions for campsites and temp residences.

When your RV is actually being used as a residence/campsite (i.e. not operating in its capacity as a mode of transportation) you would be covered by the same exemptions.

My question would be, "Why are you carrying?" If you carry to hunt, I can see the fancy-dancy bullets. Target practice, use a TMJ (not dental related). Self defense?, load that sucker up with a nice hot hollow point. That is unless Cal is like NJ where you are not allowed to have hollow points(felony possession of HP ammo, what a joke)

Bullets containing lead might be illegal in the Los Padres National Forest. They are definitely illegal for hunting; but I'm not sure about self defense ammo...

Dear Mjones and MSG, thanks for the responce.
I have been researching Cal ammo laws. The only restriction I found is armor piercing bullets.
At this point I believe hollow and soft points are good to go.

I'm gunna go to the local gun supply store today and see if they have good self defense rounds for sale.

Yes, in general Hollow Points are perfectly legal for CA; but for the Los Padres National Forest area, they might not be...

My interpretation is that as long as you aren't hunting - leas ammo is ok..

I see this as the key verbage:

"What about target shooting, “plinking”, or firearms for personal protection?
The Commission does not regulate these activities. Use of lead projectiles is legal
unless another government entity has determined otherwise for lands they administer.
The regulations prohibiting lead only relate to possession while engaged in specified
hunting activities."

So, "does not regulate", must mean I can load up Black Talons to all lead reloads in my personal sidearm.
