Every now and then, some public official in MD does something spectacularly stupid with a firearm and has to admit to the press that they have one of those ultra-rare MD Carry Permits.

I'd like to start this thread to document such news stories--no speculation, just REAL stories where public officials actually ADMIT they have MD permits.

Just as a little FWI for people.

I don't mean nothin' by it, I'm just sayin'...

Baltimore Clerk of Courts Frank M. Conaway Sr.

Baltimore Clerk of Courts Frank M. Conaway Sr. outed himself in a recent Baltimore Sun story regarding an "altercation" between well-known Baltimore guerilla journalist and blogger Adam Meister and himself. Apparently the BPD report stated that he "brandished a firearm while on his own property" because Mr. Meister was trespassing, and Mr. Conaway stated to the Sun that he has a MD permit.

No word yet on why the Baltimore Clerk of Courts isn't in jail, or why his permit hasn't yet been suspended.

Then again, one would assume that in MD such an office as Mr. Conoway's comes with certain perks--like being able to display complete disregard for rule of law when dealing with unpopular members of the alternative media who aren't completely bought and paid-for media whores of the Establishment...

If he was in fact on his own property, whether he has a permit or not is irrelevant.

We DO still have that sliver of a right left.

Regardless, the point has well been made in the past that us "commoners" would likely have been hauled down to central booking for a friendly visit with the locals if in this situation.

Senator Nancy Jacobs has always admitted to having a permit, even billing herself as a "pistol packing Grandma" at one point, although I can't recall her having done anything stupid with it.

Delegate Dwyer flatly refused to get a permit even in the face of death threats until the same right was applied to all citizens of MD.

Perhaps Mr. Conaway needs to pay more attention to the laws co-sponsored (and ultimately signed into law) by his son in the MD Senate. He might be looking at up to 15 years if anyone decides to actually pursue an "aggravated assault" charge on this "brandishing" incident...

Not entirely true...

Brandishing a firearm during a verbal altercation is STILL "aggravated assault"--on your own property or on a public street.

MD has no "brandishing" charge, per se, but they DO consider threatening or assaulting someone with a deadly weapon to be a FELONY, so perhaps Mr. Conoway has finally bit off more than he can chew.

If only the Prosecutors in MD has the spine, honor, and integrity to apply the law equally to ALL citizens, instead of having two sets of laws for two classes of people...

You just CAN'T make this stuff up--it gets better and better...

Turns out when Mr. Conoway was a MG Representative back in the 1970s, it was HE who proposed the bill in 1973 that gave MD some of the most restrictive gun laws in the Nation...

And David Codrea over at "Gun Rights Examiner" is right on this story, and has done some excellent research:

So the BIG QUESTION is still, why isn't Mr. Conway in jail? Why isn't his handgun in a BPD evidence locker, and why hasn't the MD Judiciary issued a statement requesting that he resign, as a disgrace to the Honor and sanctity of the Bench?
