Open-carry at Spring Mountains Nat Rec Area Humboldt-Toiyabe NF

A friend of mine and I will be hiking at the SMNRA of the HTNF in Clark County NV.

I called the rangers and they said the Rec Area and the HTNF now follow local state law.

I then called the Clark County sheriff dept and they said "Nevada is a traditional open carry state."

Ergo as long as the weapon is in plain sight, no proscriptions.

Anyone heard any different?

The persons on the phone did not seem terribly confident in their own answers though. Like they were both newbies put on the phones to do a job nobody else wanted to do.

So I am therefore confirming what I have been told.

I take it you agree. Your Clark Co credentials are certainly impressive, to say the least.

They may know that NV is what we call a "traditional open carry state," but they don't really know what that means since there is no legal definition. This is probably why that's all they said.

Remember that federal facilities (like visitor centers and ranger stations) are like post offices and you can't carry inside, even though the rest of the National Recreation Area is good to go.

Clark County has become friendly (mostly) to open carry again, like it was when I was young and we were ruled by more traditional sheriffs. But this time it took some activists and lawsuits to make them remember who they work for.

TECHNICALLY, you can open carry in the police station, but unless you want to be the test case (and we need one) I don't recommend it.

Just got back from hiking the Mt Charleston area. Hiked Cathedral Rock, Mary Jane Falls, Fletcher Canyon, and Sawmill Trail, all with O/C.

Nobody minded. A couple of people wanted to fondle and see the newest state of the art CZ 97B 45ACP, so I unloaded it and handed it to them. One guy was a Nam vet. He was amazed by the state of the new technology. The other was a retired lady sheriff's deputy.

The lady sheriff was funny. She said "so what do you plan to stop with that?"

I said "Well hopefully nothing."

She then said " 'Hopefully nothing' is right."

She further asked if we were from out of town. We answered " ... from out of state."

She wanted to know what states. We told her Arizona and California.

She said it was pretty safe around here, although she could understand why two guys from Arizona and California would not want to take any chances anyway, particularly since Arizona and California by comparison to Nevada are such dangerous ratholes.

It was a pleasure talking to her. She was funny.

I hate Monday-morning quarterbacking, but it's a bad idea to handle your sidearm, even when seemingly with friendlies who just want to check it out. Two things come to mind.

The first is that it's bad form (and potentially unsafe) to handle your loaded weapon unnecessarily. It's one of the arguments we use to TRY to explain to cops why it's stupid that they want to disarm us during detainments.

The second is:

I meet friendlies all the time. They are never offended during showing off guns when I tell them that the one on my hip is currently "on duty" and will have to be shown off next time.

But I'm very glad you had a pleasant experience in our neck of the woods. It's almost hard to believe just how nice the Spring Mountains are so close to the city. Even as I've seen them get more and more crowded every year, it's still a bit surprising that they aren't more so.

My view on this is that whenever anyone wants to see a new state of the art weapon, as long as they are not a low rider, nor do they outnumber me, I am willing to let them have a peek at it.

I feel that when we open-carry our weapons, and others express an interest, it aids diplomacy and puts them at ease if they can handle and fondle the weapon (unloaded) as well.

My buddy was O/C loaded as well, with his 1911 A1 while I was sharing the CZ97B 45ACP with the bystanders. He could have easily drawn and fired had he needed to. Nobody at any time wanted to see or touch the 1911 since everyone knows already what they are. It was the fascination with the state of the art CZ 97B that they were enthralled with.

Plus we were within about 5 feet, and I could have easily drawn and snapped open my 4 inch combat jackknife (USN style) had I needed to.

Whenever people ask me about firearms, I like to make it a teaching moment.

I know, you are NRA and x-USN I know. You deal in a world of ideals and perfectionisms.

These people did not worry me however.

Then you failed. Your not smart enough to teach others about safe firearms handling. This was neither the time nor place to unholster and unload. Your unsafe. I dont know you, and hope to never know you, or be around you while you carry.

That said, I really think I would like a CZ97. What's not to like?!

My Arizona buddy with his holstered and loaded 1911 was my backup if I needed one.

The fascinating thing about the CZ's is that they are now the state of the art.

Having said that, nothing beats a 1911 even so. Not even the state of the art.

I prefer the double action of the CZ's however. As do the Czechs. It's a great gun.
