Visiting CO for a wedding

Okay so I admit I have avoided CO like the plague after all the new anti-gun laws that were passed....I'm from NM and OC everyday and don't have a "pay to play Concealed Carry permit" lol.
I can no longer avoid CO as I have a family wedding in Parker to attend this weekend. I've read many postings and understand that Denver and Probably Boulder aren't gun friendly at all?
I'll try to avoid those places as best as I can (seeing there isn't a line on the ground or a fence to notice that I stumbled into Commie town).

Anything else anyone can tell me about OC in Parker or other parts of CO?

Ohh also OC around booze as in a grocery store, gas station, restaurant or bar?

Thanks everyone!

EDIT; I should include that when I say Open Carry = Holstered Pistol. NOT long gun carry.

Leave the firearm in your car when you're near Denver and Boulder, and not actively driving. In Denver, OC is illegal while Boulder will just get the Peoples' Republic of Boulder cops on you left and right. Other than that, you should be fine. But you may get approached by a cop or two while OCing - just be calm and polite and understand your rights. In some areas, OC is very rare, so the attention you get will be a lot higher. I OC in Lakewood, and have had no issues.

I couldn't address Parker that much. I haven't been back there since before I was a gun owner. It's pretty low-key, so you may be just fine. When going for groceries, I advise going to King Soopers if you can. They're the local part of Kroger, which has long ago told the MDA to go away with their no-gun-policy drivel.

If you carry in a restaurant, the owners may or may not let you. That's a highly personal issue for each one. I highly advise staying out of any area that is primarily alcohol-related (liquor stores, bars, including the bar areas of restaurants). While not illegal, the chance of somebody getting too nervous is very high. I've OC'd in many restaurants, but so far none have kicked me out. I do some research on each new one, to ensure they don't have a "no guns" policy on their website or a sign on the door.

Thanks Jack,
Like I say, I carry Open here in New Mexico 100% of the time so I don't mind someone asking about it or a LEO. There is nothing to get excited about :)
I do like Kroger, I'll be sure to hit them up. Although NM has some great gun laws we also have some really freaking dumb ones, we can't OC around booze what so ever...even if it's sold for offsite consumption like a grocery store or gas station. Also if a place sells hard liquor for onsite consumption you can't have a gun PERIOD even if you have your CCW. So you can't arm yourself if you go out to dinner at like 99% of restaurants.
But the State doesn't let local governments restrict carrying of a gun, so we don't wind up like Denver, although that hasn't stopped Santa Fe and another town or two from trying.
It sucks when law makers push laws through without caring or just because it's what their party wants.
So I take it basically;
no OC in Denver/bolder
no OC where businesses have posted signs
no OC in the normal federal places of course.

and OC is allowed into places that sell booze (not drinking it myself of course)

There isn't some law that say's no OC in parks or anything right?

From my reading, the only city allowed to keeps it's permitless OC ban from before the preemption law was Denver. It was the only city explicitly mentioned in the Peruta ruling. From my conversations with police, sheriff's deputies, park rangers, the district attorney, Boulder (and many other cities) still have an OC ban on the books, but they are null and unenforceable, unless they are Denver. That isn't to say that LEO's won't take notice of you or even try and arrest you under the old laws.

The city parks, and other city owned properties, can only ban OC if they have it posted, otherwise they haven't complied with state law, there have been several cases about this were people have been awarded nice sums of taxpayer money for bad arrests.

I'm not a lawyer, my comment doesn't constitute legal advice, neither does it create an attorney-client relationship.

You can use websites that let you get an answer from a lawyer for $20-$40 about these things just google search them.

You can also call the LEO's of the jurisdiction your gonna be visiting and make sure ahead of time.

OC in Parker

I live hear Parker Co and OC there all the time, never had any issues and the only GFZ I have encountered is Cosco , You can carry in any restaurant or bar or store that sells alcohol without issue .. I personally do not carry if I consume alcohol but thats a personal choice .

Have fun in Colorful Colorado and carry on

Will they have weed at the reception? Since its legal and all that ...

Well I didn't think about that....is there some sort of law against having a gun next to someone that is smoking weed?

Thanks for the info! I never ask LEO's about gun laws.... I've found they can be some of the worst sources of info (sadly). I do appreciate their service though ;)

Local governments CAN ban OC in city-owned property, such as parks and the like. They do have to post it, however.

And while weed is legal here, it is not so prevalent that you see it on every corner. Also, it's not allowed in public places, so there's that.

And to answer the other posts: yes, only Denver is truly exempt from preemption, that doesn't stop LEOs from giving some a hard time (even arresting some OCers). Check out YouTube for "Steve Lougner Aurora Shotgun", and you'll see what i mean. Sure, the charges will likely be dropped if they have nothing else on you, but do you really want to risk your vacation on that? I'd just suggest not OCing in some places like Boulder if you can help it.

It's working as intended

You certainly do not want to be under the influence/smoking it while carrying in public. In possession may be a grey area, although it is definitely prohibited by federal law.

That was a rather unique encounter, young kid with a shotgun. I think the OC horror stories are few and far between nowadays.

True, but there's one thing to challenge the LEO who is unjustly detaining when you're not in vacation. But when one IS on vacation, avoiding known gun-unfriendly areas while OCing might be prudent.

But I wouldn't say that Aurora (or pretty much any town other than Denver) is anti-gun regarding holstered OC handguns, it shouldn't be compared to this case. Seems like every town on the front range has had one or two "incidents" over the years but generally people don't get hassled for OC.

Even the shotgun kid could have gotten out of his detainment by providing ID under duress and claiming it as a violation later in court. Even with the charges dropped it was still an unlawful detainment and they only got him on obstruction which was quickly dropped.

ya know dario on the 16 of Oct in 2014 you made a similar statement to forum membership, let's see now how did you word it, quote: According to the person that recorded this video the criminal case was dismissed for lack of evidence (no surprise here) and he is planning on filing a civil suit. unquote (http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?123302-youtube)

and at that time, according to forum policies, you were challenged to provide a cite...which for the record you never did!!

since you bring it up again as factual in this recent post...do you have a cite for this statement ?

if not you might wish to quit providing misinformation to our new member and to other forum members.

Are you really going to beat this dead horse, solus?

Lohner, who regularly carries a gun and videotapes his interactions with police, was arrested last year for open carrying a shotgun on East Iliff Avenue when he refused to give police his identification. Those charges were later dropped.
