Visiting from Colorado!

Hello Everyone,

My soon-to-be wife and I will be visiting the Black Hills area for our honeymoon during the week of August 26th. We are from Colorado and will be driving through via Nebraska. I have a Colorado CHP, but I OC most of the time in Colorado. I've never had any issues here in CO and have been OC'ing for a year now. How is OC in the Black Hills? Any restrictions other than the usual like the post office, school zones, federal buildings, etc? I know not to carry in an establishment that gets a big percentage of it's revenue from alcohol sales or is posted no carry. We will be visiting places like Rushmore, Bear Country USA, the Badlands, Deadwood, ride the 1880 Train, visit some caves and a whole bunch others in the area. We will definitely visit and support places who are pro-2A and welcoming of OC, so suggestions would be great! Other than inside the federal buildings, can I OC in the National Parks? How about shooting in the National Forests? I'd appreciate some feedback from folks who have OC'ed here on where I can/can't open carry in the Black Hills.

Ive never had a prob carring in the Hills. I never oc tho. Usually its under my vest and its rally week. The local leo did tell me not to tell them if you get pulled over that you have a firearm. He said they have to run it and they hate doing this. He said dont say a word. I'm not saying to do this but just relaying what they told me.

A friend of mine OCed through the black hills he had no problem. Hotgeater, i don't know where you were at but they can't run it with no probable cause. Thats illegal last time i checked. yes you can carry in National Parks, State and local. Shooting I wouldnt know. Only in Approved shooting ranges like anywhere else.

Any do's or don'ts for SD? Or is OC pretty much like Colorado with the usual prohibited places? I usually OC everywhere in CO except for the city and county of Denver. I'm looking forward to coming out there to visit!

It was a Sturgis Leo. Not a rally timer but a full timer. He said they stopped someone for speeding the other day and they told them he had a firearm. They ran it. He said it causes unneccesary paper work. This is what he said, but we know how this goes. lol

I read somewhere that Federal agencies are encouraging local law enforcement agencies run a trace on any guns that they find. It checks to see if it is stolen or used in a crime. Allegedly, it also creates a temporary trace record. What are the odds that these Federal agencies are destroying the records after the trace is done, like they're supposed to....? Depending on who you talk to, the Feds are basically trying to create a back-door gun registry.

At any rate, I agree with hogeater f6. If the state does not have a mandatory notification law, then just keep your mouth shut about it.

I'm not from SD but am riding up to Sturgis for bike Rally. (6 - 12Aug) I was just reading the SD posts in hopes of picking up some nuggets of local knowledge.

Hello!

No I don't plan to run over any motorcycles lol! We will be there a few weeks after Sturgis is over. Do you plan to OC while you're there? I've done as much research as I can about OC in the Black Hills, including reading the info on handgunlaw.us. From what I've found, seems like OC is accepted there and is a not a big deal. I too, thought I'd chime in on the SD forum and see what the folks there had to say. The thread got a little derailed with some folks talking about identify issues and LEO running serial numbers. Thats okay, I hope others will chime in with their experiences OC'ing in the Black Hills.
