So far my experience has been that children notice my sidearm far more frequently than adults. Guess it's because they're closer to where it is. .

This is Truth! It also is true about those in the little electric wheelibobs. They are at hip level, weapon in your face height.

Perhaps, maybe, possibly I'm overthinking it: Should I have stuck with the 329PD?

Yes. Yes, you should have. Everyone knows that only well-trained, responsible adults carry revolvers and only stylish, well-trained, responsible adults carry Smith & Wesson revolvers.

I took my dad out to dinner in Lakewood for father's day whole OCing my Spring Filed XD. As we where about to leave this little boy, maybe 6 years old walked up to me and said "excuse me, um.... are you in the CIA?"
I laughed and told him that I was not in the CIA. The kid then got a sad look on his face and walked away. It was really cute.

A few weeks ago while carrying the same XD my wife and I where getting our son in a shopping cart outside the South Hill Wal-Mart an older lady smoking a cigarette walked up to me and asked if my gun was real. She then told me I should not carry it around all the young children around us, as a family with 6 kids walked by us. She then followed us a few steps and asked the other family if they thought it was a good idea that I was carrying a gun.. As the father turned around a saw a Glock on his said and he said" I think it's a great idea." I didn't hear anything else from the lady.

Hi XD253
Welcome! You should have informed her that tobacco and nicotine is much more harmful to the children then you're weapon.

Best regards.

I feel this is a good thread for my first post here. I was OC in a local Ferguson's Plumbing supply yesterday, and was asked by the counter manager about my weapon. He said "you know you can't conceal that?" They have a "no concealed weapons" sign. I explained that I only OC. He then proceeded to tell me that they were obligated to ask to see my CCHP, and I responded with "why?" He said it was to make sure I was legal to OC. I proceeded to explain NC laws regarding OC, and urged him to investigate it himself. One of his counter help backed me up, and the manager stated he was going to start OC since it was that easy. Last week I went in to a Dollar General store, and as I entered I was spotted by an off duty deputy still in uniform. She took note of my side, looked down at her weapon placed her hand on it as if to verify that it was on the ready just in case, and proceeded to walk past me without any concern.

Not allowed unless the state bans carrying other firearms like Texas. Someone else will have to paste the rule in as I'm on the cell

Yes, I am in Texas, but since this isn't the Texas subforum, and it may also be outside the intended scope of the original poster, and I'd want to respect his wishes if he didn't want LGOC experiences included, I just thought I'd ask first. :)

I was in the local Wal-mart as I walked in the door I noticed a fellow and his son standing by the carts. As I went by them to get my cart I heard him telling his son look he is carrying.

After I grabbed my cart I stopped and asked if he was a gun owner. He stated that he was from Michigan and that laws were different there.

I talked to him a little bit about Wis. and Michigan laws and directed him to this site for more information on open carrying.

Over all our short conversation was pleasant that ended up with is wife and other children listening. It only took a couple of minutes of my time and resulted in some good information passed on.

Just before we went on with our shopping I handed him a business card and said if you are ever in the need for any firearms training feel free to contact me.

welcome to oc tiggy, you might wish to follow up and report the deputy's action to the sheriff's department as it is inappropriate and extremely unprofessional. this kind of behaviour needs to be brought to supervisor's attention to preclude this deputy from doing something stupid in the future.

'fraid my seeing her posture and putting your hand on her service firearm would have caused a different reaction from me.

glad the other counter person backed you up and there is nothing you can do to assist those who lack the knowledge about OC'g...i did chuckle when you stated they wanted to see your CHP...

come over and post in the nc side of the house

In 6 years of OCing; I've had two employees at two different stores (Gordmans & Price Cutter grocery store) say anything to me about OCing. In both cases they approached and indicated the store prohibited firearms on the premises; both times it turned out the employees we thinking of their 'employee policy', meaning employees were not allowed to bring firearms on the premises.

From the general public; mostly I get a comment from a child who says 'mommy he has a big gun'....then the mother says yes, he is a police officer and he's your friend. (disclosure...I am not a LEO)

To prevent confusion, I don't correct; mainly there is not enough time to correct standing in line.

This right here is the correct approach. Normal folks going about doing normal stuff. +1

If a adult does not press the childs question to me, I simply smile at the little kid and keep on keeping on. Typically Mommy is busy too and is placating the child so as to get them to move along....just a guess on my part cuz that is what I do with my kids. Though, they don't ask questions about OCers cuz they no longer "see" my pistol just as they don't notice which belt I'm wearing.

Well, my 15 y/o has indicated that my black holster don't go with what I'm wearing so I switch to brown leather so as not to "embarrass him" cuz Dad don't know how to color coordinate his wardrobe....whatever.

Geesh....my three daughters (21.19,14) have gone down that road several times....Dad...you need the brown holster; not the black one!! ;)

I think they have finally given up.

I correct all the time. I just simply say "nope Im a good guy with a gun, but if you ever see a gun in someones hand call the cops, because he either is a bad guy doing something bad or a good guy who is going to need the help".

Good on behalf of the Mother!

I feel comfortable saying that nearly everyone who Open Carries in a safe manner (Not Bashing CC) is a good guy, and thus when I have a child(ren) of my own, I'd like them to know if they were ever lost or need help that these are not people that you must avoid, and its safe to ask them for help.

Worrying about what color a holster is.

I thought black goes with every thing.

But then I am more of it gets the job done kind of guy.

I can't think of a time in 33 plus years of marriage that wife ever asked me to change holsters because the colors didn't match the rest of what I was wearing.

She has said your fanny pack is really dirty wash it, isn't a black one. After looking at it I had to agree with her.

According to my kids, black absolutely does not go with everything...contrary to the thousands of years of women buying clothes and men wearing what their wives bought them. Oddly black sock do not go with swim trunks.....or sandals.....hmm.....

Oh, that's changed again! Now black socks with sandals is perfectly acceptable, provided that the black socks have a Nike swoosh on them.

I can't keep up any more.:banghead:
