Good and bad experiences today.
I met Tony at Starbucks in Hazelwood this morning and had no issues. I have never been in a Starbucks before, but it was a very pleasant experience.
I also OC'd at Bench Rest with no issues. As if that is a surprise
Things went bad when I stopped at Cabela's on my way home. I have OC'd there many times and never had an issue until today. I stopped by the store to look at and purchase an EOTech holo sight ($$$$). They did not have the exact model I wanted, but they did have a similar model. I don't want to list names here, but the person "helping me" at the gun counter has a 3 letter name so I'll refer to him as 3letter. I say "helping me" because he didn't know anything about the sights and didn't seem that interested in helping me (which is a separate issue). I also want to mention that I have seen 3letter there on many occasions, so he is certainly not a new employee. After looking at the similar model EOTech for a few minutes, 3letter tells me I need to cover my firearm. I replied, "Excuse me?". He repeated himself that I need to cover my firearm or go to the front door to have it zip-tied. I tell 3letter that is it Cabela's corporate policy to follow local and state laws in regards to OC. He insists that it is Cabela's corporate policy that all fireams must be covered or zip-tied. I set the EOTech on the counter and told 3letter I will take my business elsewhere. I walked directly to customer service and asked for the store manager. The friendly lady in customer service called for the store manager, but he had already left for the day. She asked why I needed to speak with the store manager so that she could find a proper person for me to speak with. I explained to her that I was legally OCing in the store and was going to purchase a very expensive EOTech sight but that 3letter in the gun department told me to cover my firearm or have it zip-tied. When I explained to him that it was Cabela's corporate policy to follow local and state law, he insisted it was Cabela's corporate policy that all firearms must be covered or zip-tied. I told her that had just cost Cabela's a large sale and I wanted to speak with a manager. She quickly called another manager to come speak with me. The manager that came to speak with me asked how he could help me. I explained to him what happened and he told me it is Cabela's corporate policy that OC is not prohibited where legal. He said that it is prohibited in the rest of the mall and also in the parking lot since that is mall property, not Cabela's property. He went on to say that if I did OC in the rest of the mall I would be lucky if they only escorted me out of the building. I responded by telling him that the most they could do is ask me to leave, and then file trespassing charges if I refuse to leave. And if they do anything else they are open to a lawsuit. That brought the conversation back to Cabela's company policy and the current incident. He explained to me how they don't want people removing their firearms from its holster to try out new holsters. I assured him that my firearm would only be unholstered in their store if it was needed because my life was in danger. Then he told me that very few people OC anymore, to which I reponded that a lot of people are OCing in the area. He said that they have seen maybe 10 people OCing in the store. I'm not sure if I misunderstood the manager, but I thought he said that 3letter was only saying what he was instructed to say. I suspect that is what the manager said because I remember 3letter saying that they were told OC is prohibited. That doesn't make sense given that Cabela's corporate policy is not to prohibit OC where legal, as stated by this manager. The manager did say that he was going to have a talk with 3letter. I made it very clear again to the manager that this incident cost them a large sale. He apologized for the inconvenience and wished me a nice day. I immediately left the store. BTW, I am intentionally leaving out 3letter's real name because I suspect he really was told that OC is prohibited and was only following his management's instructions. Now I am going to follow-up with communications to Cabela's corporate office.
