Armed man arrested at NC airport as Obama departs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- An Ohio man has been charged after authorities spotted him with a gun in a North Carolina airport parking lot as Air Force One was departing Sunday afternoon.

Joseph McVey, 23, is charged going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor, said Asheville Regional Airport Police Capt. Kevan Smith. Airport police saw McVey get out of a car about 2 p.m. in the rental car return lot and he had a gun, Smith said. He was taken into custody immediately and was being held at the Buncombe County jail.

Security was heightened at the airport because President Barack Obama was leaving after vacationing in the state, headed to the memorial service for the 29 West Virginia coal miners killed in an explosion. The suspect was nowhere near the president's plane and was in a public area.

Obama also visited 91-year-old evangelist Billy Graham's home after spending the weekend in Asheville.

McVey's car had strobe lights like a police car might, but the suspect is not in law enforcement, said Smith.

The investigation into what McVey was doing with a gun and why his car was equipped with strobe lights is continuing, Smith said. Local police were in charge of the investigation. The Secret Service had no comment on the arrest, deferring to airport police.

There was no answer at the jail to check if McVey had an attorney. Sounds like a goof with a gun.

Also sounds like he may have been excercizing his RTKBA. Strobe lights; maybe he is in highway constuction or an escort for oversized loads. Not enough info in the article to presume he was a goof with a gun.

Secret Service had no comment. Probably because they do not want to be involved in the @#$% storm of a law suit that hopefully the arrested person is going to pursue.
That's messed up in so many ways its not even close to reasonable.

And I seriously doubt the strobe lights where on. It was probably a racer who turns them on to show off. And as a person who used to go to street races I have seen a whole bunch of cars with strobe lights. Non of them where on when driving, only on in the parking lot.

Did anyone else catch this guy's name, and think this whole story is a little fishy? Especially considering the timing, and all the Oklahoma City hoopla in the media and their trying to tie the Tea Party and 2A folks to that event?

After reading the article and taking it at face value (always a problem with the Post) I have to agree with Hank T. on this. If indeed this guy had all of the things he is said to have had on hand he just may be a goof with a gun.

I'll wait for any updates to make up my mind which way to swing on this, but so far the evidence presented makes a pretty strong case against the man.

I don't like Obama politically, but I don't want him dead. Then he'd be a martyr, which is something we definitely don't need.

As a person who is an amateur radio operator, K9ROO, I can explain some details left out of the article.

In many states you can install strobe lights on your vehicle, some require you don't use a specific color. i.e. reserved for emergency vehicles.

I'm absolutely sure those antennas on the car are connected to amateur radios or scanners.

The guy is a whacker. Whackers in the radio world like to pretend their an important part of society, as if driving around town with 30 antennas attached to your car monitoring all the emergency bands will help assist people in the community.

im thinking that he is just a goof with a gun!
he may be a wanna be cop, with a wackerized, ex cop car..
plus he must be an open carry kind of guy, or he has no CPL, so has to handle his gun as he enters and exits his moter vehicle..

really,,, i dont know anything!!! im just ASSUMING!,,, im guessing,, im supposing.

if he had bad intent, nobody would have seen a gun!!!!!
also, he would have been on time, and in the right area to attack, if he wanted to be a bad boy!

Well, here's some more info.

Sounds kinda goof with a gunnish and wannabe coppish.

Ohio man arrested outside North Carolina airport as Obama leaves

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Airport police arrested a 23-year-old Ohio man Sunday who was carrying a handgun and listening to police radio frequencies near the runway around the time President Barack Obama's flight was leaving Asheville Regional Airport, according to investigators.

Joseph Sean McVey, of Coshocton, parked his car near a gate at the end of the terminal that leads to the runway just before 2 p.m. as Air Force One was taxiing, according to a case summary by police filed at the Buncombe County Magistrate's Office.

Police charged him with going armed to the terror of the public, a misdemeanor offense, but investigators haven't yet determined whether he was attempting to target the president. McVey was being held at the Magistrate's Office on Sunday on a secured bond set at $100,000.

Airport Director Lew Bleiweis said the suspect didn't get close to the president, who departed at 2 p.m.

Police began questioning McVey after noticing his car's Ohio license plate and other equipment, including a digital camera on the dashboard and four large antennas on the trunk lid, according to the case summary.

McVey got out of the car and started talking on a handheld radio attached to a remote earpiece, and the officer noticed he was wearing a sidearm. The officer and Secret Service agents asked for McVey's identification, and when they ran his driver's license number through a computer, it did not come back as valid, according to the summary.

When the officer asked what he was doing, McVey stated "he heard the president was in town. He stated he wanted to see the president," according to the summary.

Officers removed McVey's Springfield XD 40 handgun and detained him.

While searching his Pontiac Grand Prix, investigators heard police department radio traffic, "indicating he was monitoring our frequency when he arrived." Officers also found a siren box under his steering wheel, several pieces of paper with agency radio frequencies written on them and a sticky note in the cup holder with rifle scope formulas on them, according to the case summary.

Bleiweis said McVey's intentions were unclear, but the case remains under investigation.

Airport Police Capt. Kevan Smith said the investigation is being pursued by airport police, rather than the Secret Service. Smith said he couldn't say whether further charges will be filed.

Swannanoa resident Max Henkell was at the airport Sunday to watch the president's departure when he saw officers converge on McVey in parking lot, where rental car offices are located.

"They searched him and it looked like he had an empty pistol holster on his side, and I think I hear one of them say he had had a gun," Henkell said.

"When I realized what was going on, I was flabbergasted," he said.

Unfortunately, when ever anyone has a gun and any sort of antennas, they charge them with impersonation in many jurisdictions. I just read this online elsewhere here are my thoughts:

1) Radio: He is a licensed HAM operator, he is legally allowed in all states to have antennas.

2) Lights: They were CLEAR lights, because he is also a member of REACT, and sometimes stops. Probably not a good idea.

3) Gun: He has a right to carry.

The issue here was did he present himself as a police officer? NO! They did not charge him with impersonation, please read. No one claimed he was impersonating an officer.

For being a "Wacker" the guy is actually a member of a public service unit, REACT.
