Late this afternoon my roommate and I decided to go over to The Shootist and get in some range time. There is a Walmart right over there so we stopped in to purchase some ammo. I've OC in that particular location numerous times. One time I was told that since I was OCing I would have to be escorted out of the store after I completed my ammo purchase. That was their store policy I was told. At any rate, I have never been told that it is corporate policy to not allow anyone to carry a gun in the store except for LEOs. Well tonight that is exactly what Andrew, the store's Asset Protection Manager told me their corporate policy is.
Here's how it all went down, for those who like the play by play. My roommate and I entered the store and merrily walked over to the ammo case, we were about an aisle away when I heard an employee ask my roommate if I was LE. I was a step or two ahead of her so I turned around and told him no. He followed up asking if I have a license to carry a gun like that, I enthusiastically told him that it was not required in this state while making our way to the ammo. After looking for a minute or two we were approached by Andrew the Asset Protection Manager. Andrew asked if I was LE and after I told him that I was not, he informed me that I would not be allowed to OC in the store. I told him that I have been in here dozens of times while OC and have never been told that. I told him that I would leave the store, disarm, then come back in to speak with a store manager. While escorting me to the exit he stated that I couldn't just carry a gun like that. I told him that that's not the case and that it is completely lawful, though he seemed to be sure that he was right.
After disarming I came back in to speak with the store manager and after waiting for a considerable amount of time she finally made an appearance. I told her that I did not wish to make a scene, but that I have shopped in here on numerous occasions and have never been told that I could not OC and further that I was under the impression that Walmart's corporate policy on the matter is to abide by state law. She told me that she had to look up the policy because she initially did not herself know but found out that corporate policy is what Andrew described. I told her that I would be confirming that with the regional office.
I'll post an update as soon as I am able.
